Now is tho summer of our dis-
content made exceedingly dusty by
avery breeza that blows.
In tho dofeat of Captain T. A.
Blair tho county loses tho services

The oloction of Thomas and ilills
insures two oxeollout ropresentatives
for McLennan county in the twenty-
fourth legislature!.
Culborson's lead was increased by
Saturday's primaries. Tho young
rstatesman of tho Trinity is running
like a scared wolf.

The primary election has again
its inutility as a proper
means for ascertaining tho will of a
majority of Domocrats.

Important mcttera will bo before
the Commercial olub for considera-
tion tomorrow night. Every busi--ness
nnn in the city should be
present.
An exohango says: "In the Etst
.Indies there aro spidors so largo that
'-ihey feed on small birds." That's
nothing: In Waoa there are ileas so
largo that thoy feed on full grosvu
jb ti in an beings.
Tho system of registration
adop'ed by the county executive
oommitteo secured tho party against
tlic Iremondous ovorvoto which has
'hitherto disgraced tho party prima-
ries in Waco.
Tho contract for tho construction
q tho Cotton Palace will be let this

fitono will be laid with appropriate
oeremonios. Everybody who wishes
to assist in a good time and enjoy a
triumph is invited to come and help

Tho two great schools which
honor Waco by their presence wiH

The Nkws bids Godspeed. May
your vacation be one of pleasure
and profit and may thoso of you
who do return come baok in perfect
health and strength for another
term of arduous school work.
Henry McDjnald seems to have
lout his rabbit's foot. His attempt
to carry Lamar county for Regan
resulted in his losing his own ward
and ho would not bo in the county
convention but for tho fact that a
couutry precinct made him a dele-
gate. McDonald is one of the bril-
liant brainy men of Texas; but he
evidently got the wrong foot fore-
most somehow or other and his
iniluonco appear to be negative.
It is said a uuiubar ot lioll county
men camo over into McLennan on
Saturday and participated in tho
primaries. We of McLennan feel
graatly flattered that our Boll county
noghbors should bo interested in
our aii'aira but prefer that they
show their kindly feeling in some
other manner leaving us to conduct
our primaries by ourselves.
Charges of fraud are already
being made and the ohances for a
sq nibble in the county convention
aro particularly good. The primary
election is an all round nuisance.
Tiik Nkws opposed it before the
committoo adopted it and it opposes
it more vehemently now.
The insurance men who hatched
the co-insurance clause now on-
grafted upon all policies in Texas
have stirred up a feeling that will
cause tho passage of a vigorous law
against such a contract. This is not
a threat but a cold-blooded state-
ment of a very evident fact.
Abbott is having the fight of his
life for re-nomination but the peo-
ple have been with him heretofore
and it is not likely that thoy will
shako him now.
LANGSTON ON THE NEGRO.
Satisfied With tho Progress of
His Race.
Memphis Tenn. Juno J. Hon.
John M Langston ex-congressman
and ex-minister to Hayti who is in
tho city on a lecture tour expressed
himsolf on the subject of Ida WelU'
orusado now so prominent in Eng.
land.
Expressing himself on tho future
of tho negro Mr. Langston said: 'I
3111 most hopeful concerning it.
Since their emancipation the ne-
groes have made greater progress
than any other emancipated class.
There has been loss friction less
bad results attendant upon the free-
ing of tho negro than the world has
ever known in connection with the
emancipation of any class or raoe of
bondsmen. It must always be ex-
peotod that the groat social change
of oondition and environment whioh
is inseparable from a movement
of this kind will result in
friction but in our C3S0 there
has been but little of it. The nogro
received his freedom in poverty
and has ni3do great moral and intel-
lectual advancement. The sentiment
of tho whito people north and
60uth ha3 been favorblo to the ad-
vancement of the negro race. Many
men havo given -their fortunes
some have dovotod their livos to
this object. Our progress has not
been rapid but it has boon sure and
steady but wo aro now battor off
than any class of freedom of whom
history makes mention that is of
course taking into consideration
tho short time we have been free.
On the question of Ida Wells' ut.
torances he said: "It is no doubt
true that in times past wrongs have
been perpetrated upon tho negro but
they have almost become a thing of
the past and snob aa still appear
occasionally are being righted every
day. I have never been in England
but under English denomination
and I have no hesitation in saying
that as between such and those who
live in tho United States no com-
parison can be drawn. There is no
class of negroes in the world who
can oompaie in any respect with
those of the United States. 1 havo
seen the negro in Jamaica in the
Baibadoes and elsowhero. They
show few signs of progress or ad-
vancement socially intellectually
morally otherwise as compared with
tho Amorican negro."
Mr. Langston expressed himself
freely 3H having no sympathy with
Ida Wells' English agitation inti-
mating that her efforts to arouse
the sympathy of the English peo
plo for the colored population of
thnBouth had less of patriotism in
it than a di-siro for notoriety and
rovenue.
