(Prom Clarksville Times.)
In the year of our Lord A. D.
1850, on the 15th of October I
opened my eyes to the light of
this beautiful world on Red Riv-
er, in Red River County.
Since that time I’ve seen some
bard times and some good times.
I’ve seen great droves of wild
deer at one sight. Sometimes
they could be seen feeding with
a big bunch of cattle, which
were very numerous "In those
times.
I’ve seep wild turkeys so thick
you could not stir them with a
stick, I’ve seen them come up
to my mother’s house and fight
with her tame turkeys.
I’ve seen the wolf sneaking
through the woods in day time,
and at night they came so close
to the house and kept such
noise howling as to disturb y(
rest and sleep.
I’ve seen as many as five bei
in a bunch.
On some occasions they wou
come up close to our house an
kill a hog, shoulder it and carry
it away. We could go in the
bottoms in the dead of winter
and kill a beef as fat as anyone
ever saw.
1 saw my first overflow in Red
River in 1866 and several since
that time, but we could always
plant over and make corn enough
to do us. ^
But never in the history^ of
my life have I seen three full-
grown overflows in one year.
The first one came in April of
this year. Just as soon as it
was possible the farmers plant-
ed over, and pretty soon came
the June overflow and got what
we had, and last,\but not least,
the October overnhw came and
got our crops that wfr-had spe
money and hard labor in making.
So you see we river folks are
“up against it,” as we have noth-
ing left us for another year.
If we happen to owe you for
your paper, or owe any of your
neighbors, you will please keep
quiet and don’t write us any
dnns, and give us a chance and
we will pay if it takes the hair
ofl our heads.
