Workers think of social security as
something to expect when they get
old, Gordon James, manager of the
San Antonio social security office
said today.
One of the most important features
about this government insurance plan
is the protection it affords the family j
in case the breadwinner dies. Where 1
I
there are dependent children under
18, old-age and survivors insurance
provides for monthly payments to the
children and to the widow who is
caring for them. The widow may be
entitled to monthly benefits for life
when she reaches 65. If there is ho
child or widow, the worker’s parents
may qualify for monthly payments at
65 if they were dependent on him for
their support. In some cases there is
no one immediately qualified for any
of the types of monthly payments
and in such a case a lump-sum death
payment may be made.
There are two important considera-
tions in the payment of these bene-
fits; first, the breadwinner must have
worked under social security long
enough to be insured; and second, a
claim for the payments must be filed
with the social security office.
As a service to local residents, a
representative from the San Antonio
social security office visits Crystal
City regularly.
Q I have an unused certificate of
eligibility which I obtained fromVA
about a year ago. May I use it to
enter school under the GI Bill this
coming January, even though I un-
derstand VA is issuing new tpyes of
certificates ?
A Yes. But before you use your
certificate check with your VA reg-
ional office to make certain the
school and course are those you are
permitted to enroll in under the law
Q How much can I borrow on my
converted National Service Life In-
surance policy which has been in
force under the per manent plan for
a little over a year?
A You can borrow up to 94 per-
cent of the cash value of your VA
insurance and still keep it in force-
Loan application forms may be se-
cured from your VA office.
Q I am taking vocational training
under Public Law 16 for disabled vet-
erans and find it difficult to progress
as rapidly as others taking the same.
What happens if I fail my course ?
A Generally, VA will take special
steps to enter you in another course j
State Health
Department News
Austin, Nov. 10—The schools of
Texas have been in session for sever-
al weeks The routine screening tests
by teachers and nurses, or the phy-
sical examinations of the children by
physicians have been completed. They
are complete so far as the nurse,
teacher or examiner is concerned,
but the “follow-up” to correct any
abnormal conditions disclosed is yet
to be done. To make these screening
tests and the follow-up examinations
of the greatest value, the needed care
for correction of defects should be
available. This is the responsibility of
the parent 0f each child in order that
a maximum of health may be his lot,
declared Dr. Geo. W. Cox, State
Health Officer.
Health is a cardinal attribute of
living. With the best health a
child may have, he will do his best
work, will have joy in play, and will
grow to be the most efficient citi-
zen he is capable of being. The fu-
ture of our country is in the hands

All adults as well as the parents of
! the school age children should feel
J the responsibility and priviledge of
i sharing in a sound and safe future
for our country by helping to build
good health for the children of today.
Through the check made each year
in the schools the gross deficit may be
learned, and a more detailed examina-
| tion may be made by the family phy-
| sician, with treatment for correction

Immunization against the diseases,

i able, should be given all children un-

But we still find people who look
over this new Buick SPECIAL,
admire its style, its room, its handy
but impressive size, and say:
“It’s wonderful! Too bad it’s too
rich for my blood! ”
That’s our point—How do you know?
Have you gone to aw this car—and
learn how very much there is in it?
Have you got the actual delivered
trice figures — including the equip-
ment you want—and matched them
against others?
Some surprising things show up
when you do this.
^ ou find you can raise your standard
of car travel —step up to Buick
levels of style, comfort, handling,
ride, power—more easily than you

That’s why we keep pointing out—
this wonderful valve-in-head straight-
eight, with all its standout looks and

lower than many.
So do something about it, will you ?
Take a sharp pencil, see your Buick
dealer, replace guesses with facts
—and we think you’ll see the light
and place that order!
