uight.A telegram just receiv
ed here saj's that a great battle
has been fought at Velestino
between a Turkish force of
8000 and General Smolenitz's
brigade. The dispatch states
that th8 Turks were repulsed
with enormous losses.
The battle of Velestino raged
from sunrise until 10 o'clock
this morning. The 'Greeks have
been reinforced the reinforce-
merits arriving at the critical
stage of the fight. General
Smoienitz telegraphs that the
Turks will be unable to capture
Pbarsaia because the Cheek
position is strong and the mor

four squadrons of cavalry and
a battery of horse artUl'eiy.
The large force of Greeks there
easily beat the Turks off but
they bad displaced a half dozen

service was resumed.

point and Trikkala a general
attack was believed to be im
miuent. Fighting however oc
curred only in the vicinity of
Velestino. The Turks made an
attack before dawn but were
successfully repulsed. Three
limes in the course of the morn
ing was. the attack repeated
each time from a different direc
tion and. each .time the result
was a repulse. Apparently it
was intended these attacks
should be simultaneous but
this plan fiiiledj owing to the
lack of proper organization
The Turks; however pushed
the attack with the ulriiost de
termination for six hours and
finly abandoned the attempt to
