The Old Nueces
Philosopher
Editor’s note: The Johnson-
grass Philosopher on his John-
son grass farm on the Nueces
River has his mind on politics
this week, or it may be farm-
ing, it’s hard to tell.
Dear editar:
1 have never had any Presi-
dential aspirations or any other
kinds much and have never
worried much over who was
President, on' the theory that
the country is always bigger
than its chief executive regard-
less of how big he is and plow-
ing is as hard under one admin-
istration as another, but there
are a lot of people .not turned
that w’ay, who’s President or,
who’s gonna be President are
matters that keep them in a
turmoil.
The reason I bring this up is
that there are a lot of people
right now worrying themselves
sick over whether President
Eisenhower is going to run a-
gain, although it doesn’t seem
to be worrying the man it con
cerns the most, President Eisen-
hower himself.
Understand, I’m not entering
into the discussion from a par-
tisan standpoint, taxes have al-
ways been just as due under
one administration as another,
but everybody recognizes the
Republicans would have a sit-
uation on their hands if Eisen-
hower decided he wras going to
farm year after next. It would
be a mad scramble for the nom-
ination. There are plenty of
Republicans who know they’re
capable of being President, but
their trouble is not enough oth-
er people know it. Consequ-
ently, the whole Republican
strategy for the election next
year is based on Eisenhower’s
running again. Even I can
see that.
And that’s where my point
comes in. I’ve noticed that

from time to time Eisenhower
well-wishers have been sending
him presents for his farm at
Gettysbrug. One group sends
him a new jeep, another sends
him a new tractor, another
sends him a few registered heif-
ers, another some hogs, anoth-
er a new fireplace, etc.
What these well-wishers don’t
seem to realize is that every
time they make his farm more
attractive, they make the White
House less attractive.
The way to get Eisenhower to
run again is to make farm life
less appealing, not more so, but
if the Republicans keep on pil-
ing up these gifts, they may be
out of a candidate. In fact, I
think the Democrats have
caught on, and just the other
day a bunch of them presented
the President with a fine An-
gus cow to go on his farm. You
could tell from the knowing
smiles on their faces in the pic-
ture I saw that they knew what
they were doing.
If the Republicans are smart,
they’ll put a stop to this right
now, and start scattering John-
son grass seed around that Get-
tysburg farm and half-burying
a few plow-point-busting rocks
in the fields and leaving a few
pamphlets around the living
room on the increase of crop
pests and the likelihood of a
new drouth cycle.
Yours faithfully,
J. A.

method of payment?
A Under your lump sum
designation, your beneficiary
may elect to receive GI insur-
ance payments under any of the
installment plans available.
Q I am taking a correspon-
dence course under the Korean
GI Bill. What does VA con-

Do you have a son or daughter
working during the summer
vacation, who is likely to earn
more than 8600 before school
starts again?
If so, he or she doesn’t have
to quit work before earning
that amount for you to retain
your child’s exemption reduc-
tion. The same holds true if
you have a non-student work-
ing child who will still be un-
der 19 by the end of the tax
year.
In either case, regardless of
how much the child earns, the
parents may claim an exemp-
tion, providing he has furnished
over half the total cost of his
child’s support for the year.
This rule also applies in the
case of legally adopted children.
There is one important thing
to keep in mind. A dependent
child is also entitled to an ex-
emption deduction for himself
on his own separate return.
On the other hand, if he is mar-
ried, and files a joint return
with his wife, no dependency ex-
emption may be claimed by the
parent.
