But It Met Again at Noon Next
Day in Extraordinary
Session.
Austin Tpxas May 21. Ow-
ing to the complications which
had arisen in the senate the
house changed its mind this
morning about adjourning sine
die at 11 a. ra. and made the
hour 3 p. m. instead.
As soon as the resolution
providing for. such adjourn-
ment reached the senate the
absentees on the Presler bill
were excused-by agreemeut and
the house amendments to said
bill were coucurred in. where-
upon Mr. JBeall claimed recoe
union fiom Mr. Jester the pre
siding officer to make the point
of order that one of said amend-
merits has never been reported
to the senate. But Mr. Jester
who had a copy of the pnrolNd
bill before him having taken
the bill reported from the house
from the calendar cleik and
caused its enrollment while the
senate was under call and be
fore the amendments thereto
had been concurred in paid no
attention to Mr. Beall and an
nounced that he was ready to
sign said bill. A doz-n sena-
tors clamored for recognition
but Mr. Jester 'paid no at ten
tion to them until he had sign
ed the text book bill and rush
ed it over to the house.-
.When Mr. Beall finally got
the floor he made the point
that amendment making the
bill effective September 1 1897
instead of September 1 3898
had never been received fiom
the house and that the alleged
enrolled bill had been altered
to make it conform with said
amendment and no one denied
the allegation.
Then the gentleman from
Ellis addessed himself to the
piesident of the seuate and
made one of the saltiest speeches
ever heard in the Texa3 legis-
lative halls literally Haying
him alive." But it was no itae:
Jester had the age and was re
solved to pass the bill.
The anti text book people
are exceedinl7 sore in conse
qnence as they undoubtedly
had the fight whipped.
As anticipated in yesterday s
dispatches the governor this
eVening called an extra session
to begin at noon tomorrow and
indicated that the appropriation
bills the fee bill and the fellow
servant bill are to be taken up
and di-posed of at said session.
It is not expected that a quorum
will be on hand tomorrow how
ever or pven Monday-) Jor that
matter but that adjournment
from day to day will be had
until about Wednesday As to
the probable length of the pes
sion it is anticipated that it
will last at least twenty daj'jj.
as a hard fight will be madw on

Denver Col. May 21. Ac
cording to 'dispatches from
New Mexico heavy rains have
so swollen the Rio Grande and
other streams that considera-

valley north and south of Al-
buquerque has been inundated.
The Mexican villages of ranch
ers at De Atascisco Los Pa-
dillos Barelas and Attrisco

submerged and a number of
houses surrounded by water.
If the rise continues and the
Rio Grande sweeps over its
bank to a greater extent than
at present a number of adobe
houses will be washed down
valley farms will be obliterated
and there will be great destruc
tion to all farmers. A number
of men are watching the dyke
north of Albuquerque.
