Conrad Cloetta.
Died in this city at 6:15 o'clock
this morning) Conrad Clootta aged
U9 vears.
Deceased was a native of Lworno
Italy but came to this country at a
comparatively early age. He had
been a resident of this county and of
Matamoros Mexico for tho past
thirty years. He leaves a wife b9
sides four daughters and two sons
all grown and all of whom reside
hero. Mr. Clootta was a man who
was generally liked and respected a
man of education and good habits
and his demise is much regretted .
Tho cause of his death wgs cancer
of the stomarh.
The funeral take& place tomorrow
morning at eight o'clock from the"
family residence on Adams street
betweon 11th. and 12th. Friends and
acquaintances aro invited to attend.

Galveston News.
Amottg the recent promotions in
the army is noticed that of Captain
Eskridge twenty-third infantry to
major Tenth infantry. This officer
has been prominently identified
with the Texas volunteer guard dur-
ing the seven oare he has served in
this state and is well known to
mot of the officers and men of the
state forces. In 1S90 he commanded
the battalion of regular infantry at
tho first stalo encampment at San
Antonio where he delivered a lec-
ture on the importance of systematic
instruction of officers and non-commissioned
oflicera at state encamp
menl not only in drill regulations
but in oven thing pertaining to tho
service. In 1891 and1802 he was in-
spector at the encampments. In 1893
he cdmmaftaed tho batalion of reg-
ular infantry at the encampment and
also gave a practical demonstration
of the board of judges of drill at the
confederate reunion at Houston in
1895. Major Richard Issaac Eskridgo
was born in Missouri and entered
tho volunteer service from that state
in 1861. He was honorably muster-
ed out as captain of tho Fourteenth
Missouri cavalry in November 1865 ;
was pointed second lieutenant
Fourteenth infantry February 23
1866; first lieutenant March 22
1866; transferred to Twenty-third
infantry September 23 1S67; mad 9
captain by brevet "for conspicuous
gallantry in charging a large band
of Indians strongly fortified in .the
Infernal caverns Pitt riven Califor-
nia September 26 18o7;" captain
