BASKETBALL
The basketball team opened the offi-
cial season last night in a game with the
New York. The Steer went to press too
carly to obtain the results of this game
but we know our boys acquitted them-
jelves well.
The team is taking its work seriously
and under the tutoring of Ensign Olsen
working out regularly. They were
even seen to leave the ship for a prac-
=ee session on Thanksgiving Day. The
Basketball team is working hard for the
ship and deserves the support of the

Comdr. Gardner, is now playing the role
of senior football mentor on the Texas.
He has had a lot of football experience

football situation. Lt. Russell will be
line coach, Ensign Ruble back field coach,
and Ensign Born will take over the ends.
If all works out as planned we are to
hold spring practise. Look forward to a
big season next year.

'WRESTLERS
The last of the team meets for the
wrestling team was the engagement with
the Saratoga two weeks ago. The sea-
son considered from the angle of wins
and losses was decidedly disastrous, with
only one win to our credit, the meet
with the Arkansas. However, two of the
others were decided by one point margins
and the other two were plenty close. We
were greatly handicapped by having to
S11 three weights with men who had not
been on the mat before this year. Mar-
riott and Krekel, two of these new comers
performed in creditable style against
more experienced opposition and should,
by next season, be battling along with
the best of them.
In spite of a bad season we came
through with one group champion, Hill,
in the middleweight class. Hill beat all
the middleweights in our group with
apparent ease. No matter how good or
bad the opponent was Hill treated them
all alike - methodically polishing off an-
other one as each Friday night sailed
around.
In the winner of the other group,
Beasley of the Arizona, Hill will meet
some sterling opposition. Beasley has
won belts in the 135 and 147 pound class
and is now after his third belt. Beasley
also did quite well in the Olympic ele-
minations last year. Although wrestl-
ing up a weight this year he is still a
finished wrestler. The final takes place
on Saturday beginning at 1300. Boxing
is first, then the wrestling. Get out and
watch Hill and Kirschke bring home the
bacon.
Young Wife-"Going out again? Two
years ago you said I was your whole
world."
Husband-"Yes, it is surprising how
much geography one can learn in two
years."
Sailor (to drag)-"My dates with you
are just like a string of pearls."
Drag-"How's that?"
Sailor-"Neckless, baby, reckless."
