TEXAS departs for the Navy Yard at
Pug-et Sound at 1100 Monday, 29 May,
for a stay of three months,
Due to the latest decision of the Navy
Department, rotating reserve for battle-
ships is a th'ng of the past. Instead of
three months of overhaul and three
months of rotating the Texas will return
to the home port about 1 September.
Reasons of economy prompted the change
of plans. Whereas the rotating reserve
idea saves the government only a matte'
of $5,500,00) per year the required
amount is approximately $29,000,001).
According to press dispatches this amount
will be largely taken from the allowance
for naval shore activities, and further re-
duction in the number of men.
Activities for the summer include the
stay of the Scouting Force in San Fran-
cisco over Memorial Day and their cruise
in northern waters. About 1 July the
Battle Force will start north and spend
a few days in San Francisco. Then it
will proceed to the Puget Sound area en-
countering the Scouting Force at sea
from 7 - 10 July in a battle off the coast
of Oregon. Then the two fleets will con-
tinue their journeys in opposite direc-
tions, the Scouting Force returning to
its base here in San Pedro and the Battle
Force cruising Puget Sound.
Destroyer Divisions will go into rotat-
ing reserve as usual in continuation of
the present plan.
