17 MILLION MINUTES TO 1
-0O-Without thinking about the exis- e a iiim a
tence of such odds as the remaind- to the ship and that is al."
er of one's life versus a minute, Wagging his tail, he looked en-
which at age 35 would mean more quiringly at the Cap ain who alterthan 17 million minutes to one
minute, countless motorists and
pedestrians time after time within
a single day gamble with li'f'e with
the stakes offering no more than a
minute as the prize.
Little did it profit the chance-
takers who in 1931 attempted to
gain a minute and paid with their
own lives or the lives of others.
No one would think of risking
17 million dollars to gain possess-
ion of one dollar more. How much
more illogical it is to risk the re-
mainder of one's life to gain a
possible minute. The wonder is
who would even consider accepting
such odds.
EDITOR'S NOTE:
Now that we are soon to be on
our return voyage to San Pedro,
where almost every other sailor
has a car or a motorcycle, this
article is reprinted from the Bu-
Nav. Bulletin as especially timely.
