SHINER GAZETTE—SHINER, TEXAS
HOLD A SPRING
HAZARD HUNT
IN YOUR HOME
Spring is the time for a home
hazard hunt, according to Dr.
Geo. W. Cox, State Health Of-
ficer. Accidents in the home
are the second leading cause of
accidental death in Texas. Each
year about one thousand per-
sons die as the result of acci-
dents in the home.
Spring house cleaning time is
a good time to remove the com-
mon hazards that cause so
many home accidents. Attics,
basements and closets accumu-
late piles of junk. Piles of pa-
pers, magazines, broken furni-
ture and other combustable ma-
terial are dangerous fire haz-
ards. In addition, rats, mice,
cockroaches, and other pests
thrive in trash heaps.
Loose throw rugs are noto-
rious for causing falls. Toys and
other objects scattered over the
floors and stairway often cause
falls. Check the electrical cords
and see that they are in good
shape. Frayed electric cords
have caused fires and some-
times fatal shocks.
While rounding up piles of
junk to throw away, don’t for-
get to look into the garage,
backyard and alleys. In your
spring clean-up check your
garbage can. Be sure that it is
of metal and see that it has a
tight fitting lid. Cooperate with
your neighbor in seeing that the
community disposes of all* gar-
bage and trash in a sanitary
manner.
This general clean up, if car-
ried out all through the year,
will reduce home accidents and
sickness or death from such
diseases as polio, thyphoid fev-
er, malaria, typhus and others.
Pie, coffee, soda water will
be served Friday night, April
24, at a nominal cost.
Mrs. Quentin Schaefer has
returned to Dallas after spend-
ing a few days with her moth-
er.
Mrs. H. G. Koether accom-
panied her grandson, Jay Fran-
cis, to Houston Wednesday, re-
turning home Friday.
