code sound for A (dot-dash) and N (dash-dot), making a
solid hum. This led a pilot to the airport. The signals
became increasingly strong when flying to the broadcast-
ing point and diminished when flying away from the sta-
tion. It narrowed to a "cone of silence" directly over the
emitting station. The sound of the beam is loudest imme-
diately prior to that point.
