The rain of yesterday morning gave
placo during the day to a bright sun of
almost summer warmth and the night
closed in soft calm and boautiful as if
the rain was all over and gone and
spring had come to stay bringing to

fringo of soft rain cloud skirted the
western horizon over which ever and

sprite like pyrotechnics. The cloud
crept over tho edgo of the northern

ttperlence of The Banter In the Pino'

Thrilling Fight lo the Drstth llcautlrul
Bncclmon of tho ICquIn Urnd.
"Ono of the queerest things about
Nevada nnd ono that has kept tuo on-
dering." snld Tom D. Sellers of Carson
to an Examiner reporter at the Baldwin
"are those wild horses. I hare lived in
Novada twcnty-ilx years. A good deal
of that tliuo I liavo been In tho Comstock
rango but when not there mining 1 have
been off in tho hills of Douglas Nye
Churchill and Lander counties.
"It Is In theso that many bunds of
wild horses roam at their pleasure both
winter and summer. In winter the wild
horses usually seek shelter in tho Pino-
nut rango of Douglas county.
"This Pinenut rango extends for sov-cnty-ilre
or a hundred miles out toward
Utah and is covered with a thick growth
of shrublike pines which bear a nutritious
nut and which givo nruplo shelter whilo
affording the seclusion which tho wild
bauds seek. Tho Indians used to live on
this nut. and they do yet to soma extent
but in tho valleys below the pines and
growing at intervals among them is a
very nutritious crass. It is on this that
tho wild horses live.
LARGE UUSTANQS.
"Tho real mountain wild horse is a
mustang of largo size. His shoulders
are unfitted for tho collar not being so
heavy as thoso of the American horse
and ho is a mountain climber scarcely
excelled by tho wild goat.
"Every color from bright bay to iron
gray wliite and black can bo found.
For steady running nothing of tho equine
breed can eqf al him. Tho racers which
run on our tracks wuld qutrun him for
a couplo of miles perhaps but they have
not tlio staying qualities of tho wild
ones.
"I am just in from tho Pinenut range.
I went over there hunting deer in com-
pany with William McKcndrce nnd John
Thurston of Piochc. We fell afoul of a
band of about twenty wild horses that
dashed into our camp nnd liked to have
mudo us walk ruoro than 100 miles. It
was about 10 o'clock and wo had just
turned in.
"Our camp ilio was yet biightly
blazing and 1 heard n roar off to tho
northwest like tho trend of an advancing
army. Wo weroon the 1101 til west Bide
of tho rango and thcio wus a steady in-
cline right down to us for a couplo of
miles. I gazed out into tho dim light
but could soo nothing as the ilrc into
which I had previously been looking und
thinking blurred my eyes.
"Tho roar continued and' I called to
Thurston nnd McKcndreo to get up and
that something was going to happen.
One said it was a storm brewing away
oil in tho hills nnd tho other thought it
was an earthquake
"All three of us pcorcd forth into tho
darkness. Our four horses grow uneasy
nnd dashed around and pulled at their
lariats.
"In a minute wo Eaw tho band emerge
from a Btretch of- pines and come on to-
ward us. They wcro tunning at A fear-
ful rate; their nostrils wcro dilated and
their long manes and tails flying in the
wind. Their eyes Unshed fire and none
of us could underbtand tho reason of
their flight. On they camo seemingly
seeking protection and dashed right up
to us.
"Wo saw wo wero to be ground under
their heels unless wc did something and
wo began to shout and halloo for all we
wero worth.
"Our horses wcro mcantimo dashing
and charging and it looked as if every
instant they would break away. We
grasped our guns and tired over tho
heads of tho liorscs for they wcro so
pretty that wo didn't wont to kilVAhem.
"Finally just at tlio last Bccond of
time when wo thought wo wcro to bo
borno down by tho wild throng thoy
turned and dashed down tho hill into tho
darkness.
"By this time wo began to hear weird
howls and neighing and stamping.
Every onco in a whilo wo heard a
whack as though something was hitting
Romething clso with terrific force com
bined witl louder howls. The noiso was
just behind tho spur of pinenut trees a
quarter of a milo away. It continued
louder than over and two of us con
cluded to push on out end sec what tho
rummis was.
"Judgo of our surprlso when wo see
three old stallious surrounded by a pack
of big mountain wolvcujand kicking and
biting for nil thoy wero worth. Threo or
four of tho wolves had been sent to
grass their ribs broken and disabled in
otner ways.
A FIERCE COMBAT.
"Around tho stallions were tho able
bodied wolves snapping and growling
and showing their long white vicious
teeth. Their eyes gleamed wickedly in
the darkness. Tho side of ono of the
horses wus bitten and bleeding.
"Tlio horses stood almost head to head'
and planted terrific blows on tho heads
and bodies of tho woltes.
"Every onco in a while a wolf de-
scribed u parabola in tho air. It was a
scene long to be remembered. Out there
in tho keen crisp night air of tho moun-
tains tho three wild horses wero fighting
not only for their lives but for tho lives
of tho younger and weaker members of
tho baud who were being defended from
tho wolves who hungry had stolen in
upon them.
"We fired on tho wolves nnd for a
minute there was uu interesting 11 fusil-
lado as you could wish to seo. Vo shot
right into tho pack to tho right and left
of tho horses and seeml of tho big gray
wolvea bit the dust. Thoy did not give
up right olf. though
"They still eyed nnd snapped violently
at the horses and even when wo had
disrupted tho band by our tiring nnd the
horses turned to run away tomo of tho
wolves followed them. A shot fiom
Thurston's gun however (lied tho old
lead wolf nnd another hull crippled tho
next and tho wild horws fled far away
