Owing to the crowded condition of
the-Marfa postoffice and a heavy in-
crease in mail business postmaster O.
I. Niccolls will enlarge the present
building.
Jas. Stewart S. A. Thompson "and
Chas. Mulhern of Fort Davis were In
El Paso attending a meeting of the
Scottish Rite Masons.
The Marfa History club will meet
with Mrs. TV. W. Bogel Saturday after-
noon. The Guild of the Episcopal church
of Marfa will meet hereafter the first
Wednesday in each month. The next
meeting will be held at Mrs. Jim Walk-
er's ranch.
Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Mifrhell made an
auto trip to Alpine recently. They were
accompanied to Marfa by W. B. Mitch-
ell of San Marcos Texas who has lum-
ber interests at Alpine and ranch in-
terests near Marfa
Dr. Wl E. Robertson is in El Paso
en route to Hermosillo Sonora Mex-
ico to look after his mining interests.
Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Boyd and Edgar
Boyd are here from EI Paso guests at
the St. George.
The young women of Marfa are pre-
paring invitations for a dance to be
given at the Marfa opera "house on
April 1.
Mrs. A. O. Hubbard was called to
Teuigtry Tex. by her daughter. Mrs.
E. Winters whose little child was seri-
ously ilL They left for Del Rio for med-
ical treatment for the child.
Globe Ariz. March 25. Mrs. Milton
Fisher is at the county hospital in a
dying condition and her husband is
lodged in the county jail with a shoul-
der blade broken. Such is the resuit
of a family quarrel late last night
near the old Dominion smelter. About
8 oclock Fisher went to his wife's
room where she was staying with a
. neighbor and persuaded her to accom
pany nim to nis nome. Alter tney nao.
reached his house he began quarrel-
ing with her she said and becoming
enraged he drew a razor from his pock-
et and began slashing his wife. In
trying to take the razor from him Mrs.
Fisher was badly cut about the hands
and arms.
Weakened from "the loss of blood
and the struggle with her husband
Mrs. Fisher fell prostrated on the
ground after which Fisher struck her
on the left side of the neck about an
inch below the ear with his razor
leaving a cut about three inches long
and an inch deep.
Realizing what he had done Fisher
ran and jumped headfirst in a well
landing 75 feet below. Neighbors hear-
ing the wife's screams went to her
rescue. Later Fisher was rescued from
the" well and taken to the sheriff's
office where a physician attended his
wpunds.
It Is said that the family had been
quarreling for some time and that Mrs.
Fisher refused to live with her hus-
band. They came to Globe a year ago
from British Columbia.
It is reported at the hospital that
Mrs. Fisher has a chance lor recovery.
Her husband is violently insane and is
continuously praying fo rhis wife's recovery.

Nogales Ariz. March 25. News from
Calabasas a village nine miles from
Nogales is to the effect that nearly all
the children in the community are
stricken with scarlet fever. No deaths
have been reported.
Whooping cough is prevailing among
j the children in Nogales to such an ex-
j tent that the board of school trustees
j may find it necessary to close the
school for a few days.
Mayor Arnold of Cananea is in No-
gales accompanied by attorney Canale
of Hermosillo.
Mrs. L. I. Temple and little grand-
daughter Evelyn Temple spent several
days in Naco.
Mrs. B. M. Ashby and little son Rollo
have returned from a trip to Guaymas.

volunteers ne woum iind enough willing
re-ruits in El Paso to fill the ranks of
an army that could send Sam Hill to
Happy Hunting grounds and then some
is given in the ready responses to calls
for volunteer census takers. All w ill have
to work like soldiers In the field for It
is trying work which it rewaided only
by the knowledge that El Paso is to
have "a square deal."
Walter Clayton who divides his time
between his aldermanic office and sell-
ing feed for hungry horsemen has not
only volunteered to take the census of
the block In "which he resides but will
also procure the names of those living
on the block in which his businebs house
is located.
Each day a list is brought in giving
the names of those who will push the
tvork of securing a correct census of the
city and the latest additions are from
East El Paso showing a number of
bard workers as follows:

phy 'manager of the Gage ranch had
his hand badly mashed while working
on a windmill.
A. S. Hall and wife of Boston Mass.
have returned to their home after visit-
ing their son Francis at this place for
a few days.
Mrs. R. A. Egbert left recently for
-Salido Colorado to join her husband.
They will in future make their home
at Salido.
Miss Mary Lee Hays of Mineral
TVells Texas is visiting her uncle TV.

Miss Lena Fletcher who has been
visiting relatives in Alpine has gone
to El Paso where she will be the guest
of Mr. and Mrs. TV. TV. Turney.
An enjoyable party was given by
Mrs. A. M. Turney at her .home on the
west side of town in honor of Misses
Lena Fletcher and Mary Lee Hays who
have been visiting in Alpine for sev-
eral days.
Mrs. M. T. Chastain spent a few days
in Marathon visiting her son Earl ana
wife.

New Settlers Arrive and
Commence Improve-
ment on Banehes.
Carlsbad X. M. March 25. Another
fine shower of rain fell in this sec-
tion of the county which will assist
materially the good resulting from first
rains. The heaviest portion of the
rain fell on the plains country. Imme-
diately east of Carlsbad and extended
in a southwesterly direction across the
farming portion of the valley south of
town and as far west as the foothills
Its greatest benefit will be to the grass
which is now getting a good start.
Capt. E. L. Bujac chairman of the
board of county commissioners is
spending a few days at his ranch in
the mountains northwest of town.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Hicks have arrived
in the city from San Francisco for a
visit with the parents of the latter
Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Bitting.
Joseph Nash of Oklahoma has ar-
rived in this city with a carload of
household good which he Is placing in.
his new home on a 100 acre tract of
land which e purchased from I. S.
Osborne southwest of the city. He
&lso purchased a tract of land about
10 miles south of the city which will
be farmed by his' son. He is a prac-
tical farmer and will practice intensi-
fied farming on his new land.
T. S. Webb is erecting a five room
home on the 160 acre farm which he
purchased a short time ago southeast
of town. The superstructure Is about
completed and he expects to occupy it
as soon as the plasterers and painters
have their work completed. It is an
alfalfa farm a portion of which will
be devoted to small fruits.
G. J. Meyer of Pine Bluff. Ark. has
commenced the improvement of his new-
farm south of town. He wiU plant it
in alfalfa and affelaria. which Is a
new crop to be planted with alfalfa
in this section. It grows wild In the
valley and when planted with alfalfa
will doubtless produce one of the finest
feed crops yet grown in this part of
the country.

cessor to the late federal judge Bryant.

interview but refused to say whom he
thought would obtain the office. It is
