KI,
FINAL CHECKOUT-J. H. 'Dusty" Rhoades, Dept. 74 foreman,
checks over finished paint job.
'Superior'
Ultra-Modern Method Used
In Division's Paint FactoryThree huge waterfalls roar in
the background. An isolation sign
bars admittance.
A team of eight men in masks
work over various parts of the
exterior from special stands sur-
rounding the F-111.
This is the usual procedure
used in camouflaging an F-111 in
the paint-bay area, says J. H.
"Dusty" Rhoades, foreman, of
Department 74.
After the airplane leaves the
assembly line, the finish depart-
ment in Bldg. 176 has a 42-day
span time to complete the task.
Here's how the painting pro-
gresses:
Air Force special project of-
fice furnishes the original cam-
ouflage design. Ann Bickle, de-
sign draftsman, c o n v e r t s the
drawing into blueprints, which
are in turn converted into a
marked stencil pounce pattern of
the airplane exterior.
Painting is handled in one of
three paint bays, each of which is
large enough to handle two
F-111s at one time. Each bay is
separated by heavy sliding doors
and is equipped with a Honey-
well control system which handles
the heating system, air condition-
ing and the water recirculation
of the water falls. The waterfall
takes the paint overspray out of
the air.
From the time the F-111 is
turned over to the finish depart-
ment, the process includes: spot
cleaning, masking, alkaline clean-
ing, r i n s i n g, phosphoric-acid
cleaning, rinsing, applying chem-
ical film as required, rinsing with
deionized water and hot-air dry-
ing for five hours at 120 to 135
degrees F.
The airplane is then primed
and remasked. The stencil patternis laid on the plane and a pounce
(chalk bag) is used to apply the
pattern to the lines of the camou-
flage scheme. This technique is
refined to the degree that once
the actual painting of the camou-
flage has been started, the oper-
ation is completed in less than
five hours.
Following the camouflage appli-
cation, the wings are opened and
the inside area and leading edges
are painted red to prevent cor-
rosion. After the paint is applied
to the antennas, nose, wheel well,
and the main missile bag, all
markings are applied. The plane
is wiped with brullin (cleaner),
and the final bake begins for five
hours at 120-135 degrees F.
Rhoades, who has had exper-
ience painting the Catalina, B-24,
B-36, 102, PB2Y3, 106, and B-58,
believes the F-111s painting fa-
cility is far superior to any he
has been associated with.
