Fieldhouse Thursdays from 6:30
to 7:30 p.m.By almost any yardstick, base-
ball is summer-time "king" at
GD/FWRA.
About 325 youngsters-age 7
through 16-p e r f o r m weekly
under the lights on two of the
area's best-equipped diamonds.
They are tutored expertly by over
40 adults-managers and coaches.
Not uncommonly, o v e r f l o w
crowds, predominantly adult, root
for their minions with big-league
gusto.
The man behind this explosive
growth of GD/FWRA J u n i o r
Baseball Activity is R. B. Smith,
Dept. 3-7, who took over as com-
missioner five years ago.
As a result of his efforts, Smith
was named winner of the coveted
EugeneCrosier Award as the
most outstanding activity of the
past year.
Bob N o r m e n t, GD/FWRA
president, bestowed the honor on
Smith at President Frank W.
Davis' annual dinner-dance re-
cently honoring GD/FWRA
Council members and their wives.
Smith received a plaque. In
addition, his name was inscribed
on the huge trophy which per-
manently adorns the GD/FWRA
trophy case.
Crosier was assistant supervisor
of employee services when he died
in 1956. A local firm donated a
loving cup in his honor for honor-
ing the outstanding activity each
year.
Previous winners were: astron-
omy 1957-58; boating 1958-59;
welfare 1959-60; square dancing
1960-61; rockhounds 1961-62; and
art 1962-63.
Smith became commissioner in
1959, when the activity consisted

In addition to league growth,
there have been many improve-
ments to the physical layout, in-
cluding addition of: lights and in-
field to Field No. 2; grass infield
and dugout for Field No. 1; and a
press-box, public-address system
and scoreboard.
Adding a new diamond enabled
older boys to play regular league
games at the area for the first
time. Previously, they had to
search the city for playing sites.
Looking ahead, Smith is think-
ing in terms of still another dia-mond so that even more games
can be played at the area weekly.
During Smith's tenure, Fresh-
man League teams have captured
a state championship and gone to
district playoffs twice. Sophomore
teams gained district playoffs on
five occasions.
"Our managers and coaches do
a wonderful job," Smith said.
"They deserve much of the credit
for the activity's success."
He also lauded the efforts of C.
W. Van Amburg and C. J. Hall
for their contributions during the
past season.Junior Baseball Champs Crowned,
