AND SPORTS
PACE SETTERS-Giants jumped off to an early lead in the Minor
League, while Indians led the way in the Freshman loop. Names
listed in story below.
Giants, Indians Take Early Lead
In GD/FWRA Junior BaseballGiants and Indians sported un-
blemished records through the
first few weeks of GD/FWRA
Junior Baseball League play.
Giants compiled a 5-0 record in
the Minor League (ages 8 and 9),
standing in the Freshman loop
(ages 10 through 12).
Opening games in the Junior
League (15 and 16) and Sopho-
more League (13 and 14) were
slated this week.
"Turnouts have been excellent,"
reported Commissioner R. B.
Smith. "It looks like we're off on
one of our most successful cam-
paigns."
All games are being played on
the well-kept GD/FWRA dia-
monds.
The Giants' formidable pitching
staff of P a u 1 Brooks, Carey
Walker and Bill McCleary has
yielded only eight runs in five
games. A s s i s t a n t Manager D.
Batts reports the trio is getting
plenty of help-offensively and
defensively-from Catcher Roy
Guinnup. John Hillis has been
pacing Giant batsmen.
Joe Rollins has shone both on
the mound and at the plate in
the Indians' latest victories. He held the Panthers to a single
safety during a five-inning pitch-
ing stint and belted a three-run
homer that led to a 7-1 win. Gor-
don Ritchey, Greg Miller and
Steve Perkins led the hitting bar-
rage in the Indians' 6-1 win over
Pirates.

2-Man Volleyball
League Forming
Ever hear of a two-man volley-
ball team?
Whether you have or not, you'll
have an opportunity to join a
doubles league this summer, ac-
cording to Commissioner Andy
D'Ascenzo.
"The advantage of doubles over
six-man play is that it increases
the players skill in ball handling
and court movements," D'Ascenzo
said.
The same rules apply to both
versions, except the court is short-
ened by four feet for doubles play.
At present, doubles are played
from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., each
Thursday, and 3 to 4 p.m. each
Saturday.
"I would like to remind all GD/-
FW employees and friends about
the U.S. Volleyball Association
sanctioned tournament to be held
at the GD/FWRA Fieldhouse Sat-
urday," said D'Ascenzo.
Various teams from the South-
west Area have been invited to
enter in this event. "This will be a
good time to see some real volley-
ball action."
