“They had a set we were not

After the opening kickoff,
Plainview began from their own 24

quarteiback, Kyle Miller, picked up

Leveiland’s offense stayed on
the field and were at their own 45
yard line as the second quarter be-
gan.
Romero scrambled around to
begin the second quarter and dug
out 33 yards to the Plainview 27
yard line. He added another seven
yards to the 20. Romero rolled out
on the next play and fired a bomb to
his left into the arms of Alexander
for the 20 yard touchdown.
Bawcom added die extra point kick
and Levelland was within two
points of the Dogs, 12-10, with
10:23 left in the first half of action.
Levelland’s spirits were soar-
ing. Some adjustments were made
and Plainview quickly found out
that the Lobos meant business.
Plainview went three downs
and out on their next possession.
The Lobos were held on downs
and punted the ball back.
Plainview tried to run the ball
but were stopped by Villarreal,
Patino, Jordan, Hutchinson, and
Johnson. They punted once again.
Levelland was at their own 20
yard line with 4:25 left in the first
half. A quick pass from Romero to
Johnson moved the chains. Tezeno
added a 29 yard run to move the
ball into Bulldog territory. Then a
penalty and incomplete passes
stopped the drive.
Plainview took <ver at the
Lobo 45 yard line after the fake
punt by Levelland. The Dogs tried
to bust through the Lobos but
Hutchinson made a key tackle.
Then as the quarterback was
scrambling around, Jordan made
the hit and forced a fumble.
Coronado dove at the ball and
Mitchell made the recovery at the
Lobo 16 yard line.
Levelland had regained conuol
of the ball and ran out the clock in
the first half of play.
Levelland received the kickoff
to begin the third quarter. Coronado
returned the kick 35 yards to the 50
yard line.
Tezeno began the action from
the line of scrimmage with runs of
four and seven yards. On the third
play of the drive, Tezeno rolled off
Then Plainview mixed up the
pass with the run attempting to
break down the Lobo defense.
It did not work as indicated
above. The Lobo defense took care
of business and held Plainview on
the five yard line of Levelland.
Levelland tried to work their
way out of the hole but a penalty
kept them within the 10 yards. The
Lobos tried a couple of different
things and took two delay oi game
penalties to be backed up to their
own endzone. They decided to set-
tle for the safety with 1:52 left in
the game and make the score 16-14.
This would offer up the free-kick
giving more room for the kicker.
Bawcom booted the ball down to
the Plainview 28 yard line.
The rest is history as the Lobo
defense took over and held the
Bulldogs out of the endzone by the
final buzzer.
“We did not let up,” said
Speck. “In this monstrous district, it
comes down to the wire every
week. We made some good
defensive adjustments.”
A few players were banged up
and bruised. But, overall, the Lobos
came out unscathed.
Levelland is 4-1 for the season
and 2-0 in district action. The
Bulldogs are 1-1 in district action.

Lobo band gears up
for marching festival
When the Lobo Marching
Band steps out on the Astroturf of
Jones Stadium Tuesday for the
annual Texas Tech University
Marching Festival, they will do so
with the style and flair of a
seasoned marching unit.
That’s the expectation of
Levelland High School band
director Rodney Parker. “We are
amazingly prepared for this
festival,” said Parker. “This band is
probably more prepared at this
point in time for marching contest
than any other band I have had in
my 21 years of being a band
director.”
The Lobo Band will perform
its “Tribute to the Beatles” at 8:18
p.m., Oct. 10 at Jones Stadium as
one of 30 high school bands that
will participate in the festival
hosted by TTU band fraternity
Kappa Kappa Psi and sorority Tau
Beta Sigma. The festival is open to
the public and there is a $2
admission charge per person.
The festival will give the
100-member band the opportunity
to perform before critic judges in
preparation for the Region 16 UIL
Marching Contest Oct. 21 in Jones
Stadium
“It’s a pre-contest event that
allows us to march on the Astroturf
and get some feedback from judges
so we can find out how
well-prepared we are for the UIL
contest that realty counts,” said
Parker
The band’s show, which has
been presented in stages during
halftime performances of Lobo
football games, features some of
the Beatles' most memorable
songs, including “AH My Lovin'.”
“Eleanor Rigby,” “Ob-la-di,
Ob-la-da” and “Yesterday.”
“Those of us who gi ew up w ith
the Beatles remember these songs
and the kids have had a great time
performing them,” said Parker.
Parker also attributes the
band's readiness for the festival to
lots of hard work, better attitudes
and a lot of enthusiasm. “We've
had excellent leadership from our
seniors who lead by example. Plus,
we have a lot of committed young
musicians in our band this year,”
he said.
Parents and band boosters are
invited to attend the festival to
support the band.
