Volunteers
OXY-Permian/Mallet/
Slaughter Plant
blitz building project of its kind in
the United States.
They had previous experience
on construction projects and were
assigned as crew leaders for the
Channel 13-28 house, doing much
of the work themselves and
showing 40 other volunteers how
to cut a piece of wood or hammer a
nail. \ 1
"It was a lot of hard work. It
was amazing ho\V rriany people
showed up," noted Ricker. "It's a
good community project." He was
also interviewed on Channel 13's
live newscast by anchor Kevin
Steele.
About 1,000 people $howed up
the first day to work on 17 houses.
Another three houses are expected
to be completed by the find of the
year.
The work went quickly. "By
the end of the first day, we had
built the walls, the trusses for the
roof and the decking. Pretty soon
it resembled a house." explained
Etheredge.
The-project became even more
rewarding when the future
homeowner, a single mother of
two, showed up to drive the first
nail. Her sons also helped.
Both worked the first day, and
Ricker volunteered to work several
additional days to help complete
the house. "Once you get there, you
thoroughly enjoy it," said Ricker.
"I plan to stay involved with them
(Habitat for Humanity).
"It was wonderful but tough,
one of the neatest experiences of
my life," agreed Etheredge.
