Ag chemicals institute awards scholarships
The West Texas Agricultural
Chemicals Institute (WTACI)
awarded eight scholarships totaling
$6,300 to students majoring in
agriculture at Texas colleges and
universities. The scholarships were
presented at the institute's 48th
annual educational conference at
the Lubbock Memorial Civic
Center.
Founded in 1953, WTACI is a
consortium of educators, producers,
consultants, chemical company
dealers, and agribusiness
representatives and leaders. The
annual conference focuses on
environmentally sound use of
pesticides and other chemicals
needed in sustainable, high-yield
production agriculture.
The institute has presented more
than $30,000 in college
scholarships (funded by its
conferences and gifts) to more than
50 agriculture students at Abilene
Christian University, Angelo State
University, Lubbock Christian
University, Sul Ross State
University, Texas Tech University
and West Texas a&M University
since initiating these endowments in
1983. Last year it expanded
scholarship eligibility to include
graduate and undergraduate
students attending colleges other
than the original six universities.
This year’s scholarship
recipients include six undergraduate
and two graduate students The

Cliff Bowen, Memphis, $1,000.
Bowen attends West Texas A&M
University, majoring in Integrated
pest management.
Kacy Atkinson, Garrett, WY,
$750. Atkinson attends West Texas
A&M University, majoring in
Agricultural Business.
Elizabeth Baldwin, Thornton,
$750. Baldwin attends Abilene
Christian University, majoring in
Agricultural Business.
Amanda Hannan, Happy, $500.
Harman attends Texas Tech
University, majoring in Integrated
Pest Management.
Liz Smith, Borger, $500. Smith
attends West Texas A&M
University, majoring in Integrated
Pest Management.
Kristy Synatschk, Sudan,
$1,000. Synatschk attends Texas
A&M University, majoring in
Agricultural Development.
Graduate students receiving
WTACI scholarships are:
LeAnn Lyon, Morton, $1,000.
Lyon attends Texas Tech
University, majoring Crop Science
Jarrad Kamei, Yorktown,
$1,000. Kamei attends Texas Tech
University, majoring in Crop
Science.
In addition to these scholarships,
WTACI last year established two
scholarship endowments
administered by Texas Tech
University. One funds scholarships
for agriculture students at Texas
Tech and the other provides
scholarships for agriculture students
at the original six universities.
More than 400 producers,
educators, consultants and
agribusiness people attended the
institute’s 2000 annual conference
- which featured presentations on
conservation tillage, the future of
agriculture, irrigation scheduling,
food quality and safety, and an
update on ag legislation
Educational workshops focused on
weed control, herbicides, insect
pests, and plant diseases capped off
the day-long event.
