Antelopes fall in final minute to Dragons, 81-73
bv Mara Fortner
A steal and a missed 3-point
shot in the final minute-and-a-half
of basketball action on Saturday
night led to the downfall of the
Whiteface Antelopes. Paducah cap-
tured the Class A Region I Area
championship trophy with a final
score of 81-73 inside Hutcherson
Gymnasium in Plainview.
Scoring had gone back-and-
forth throughout the entire ball
game. Cy Cribbs sank a 3-point
shot with 1:35 left on the game
clock to knot the score at 73-apiece.
Kyle lgo stole the ball from the
Paducah Dragons and began to set
up the Antelope offense. The
Dragons were not in foul trouble
yet so they fouled Whiteface in
hopes of getting the ball back on
the inbounds play.
After a called timeout, the
Dragons stole the ball and drove
down the court for the layup and a
75-73 lead with 67 ticks left on the
game clock.
Whiteface attempted a 3-point
shot but it bounced off the rim into
the hands of the Dragons.
Time was flying off the clock
for the Antelopes. They were forced
to foul. The Dragons made their
free throws and Paducah was re-
HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THE CROWD — Senior
Whiteface Antelope, John Allison, has risen more than head and shoulders
above his opponents throughout his high school basketball career. Allison

bounding their desperate shot at-
tempts. In the final 30 seconds of
the game, Paducah added six out of
eight shots from the charity stripe to
end by the score of 81 -73.
Whiteface’s prosperous season
came to an abrupt end with an over-
all record of 22-7.
Paducah advanced to the Re-
gion I Quarterfinal round against
O’Donnell with a record of 23-3.
The gymnasium was packed
with loyal fans and spectators sup-
porting both talented teams.
The Dragons won the opening
tipoff and went straight to the hoop
for a 2-0 lead.
Whiteface attempted a couple
of shots inside the paint but could
not get the shot to fall. Lance
Davidson was fouled on one at-
tempt and stepped to the free throw
line. His shots were good and the
score was tied at 2-2.
The Dragons tipped in a re-
bounded shot with the Antelopes
answering with four points and a 6-
4 lead, lgo and Cribbs hit the back-
to-back buckets.
The next couple of shots were
traded with a five foot jumper from
Davidson. The score was tied at 8-
apiece with five minutes left in the
first period.
Matt Ellison, lgo, and Serapio
Arguijo combined a layup, a drive
up the middle of the court, and free
throws over the next minute for a
14-8 lead.
The Dragons managed a couple
of shots but continued to trail the
Antelopes, 14-12.
John Allison was found open
under the hoop by Arguijo for the
layup. He drew the foul and con-
verted the play into three points for
Whiteface.
The Dragons had the same
success on a layup for a 17-15
game.

the final buzzer. He is shown above flying in for the layup during the
Region 1 Area basketball game against Paducah. Down front for the
Antelopes is Dusty Ruthardt. (Staff Photo)
Allison added a short jump shot
along with a rebounded bucket from
Ellison for a 21-15 Antelope lead
with 1:44 left in the quarter.
In the final 1:32 of the game,
the Dragons and the Antelopes
traded shots. However, the Dragons
shots were 3-pointers as they cut
into Whiteface’s lead. By the end of
the quarter, Whiteface had a slim
25-24 lead.
The Dragons relied on their
quickness in the second quarter to
t^Ke over control of the game from
Whiteface. They opened the period
with back-to-back shots and a 28-25
lead.
Allison helped the Antelopes
stay within breathing distance with
two layups. A 10 foot jumper from
lgo tied the game at 31-31 with
4:35 left in the half.
The Dragons slipped back up
by a point on Whiteface with a shot
from the free throw line.
Allison and Davidson made
some key buckets over the next
minute for a 36-35 game in favor of
the Dragons.
Each time the Dragons tried to
jump ahead, Whiteface responded
with a shot from the field. The
score remained at a one-point dif-
ference for the rest of the period as
lgo and Allison made their shots.
Then with no time left on the clock,
Paducah flung up the shot and it
slipped through the net as the
buzzer sounded to give them a 45-
41 lead at the break.
The Dragons began the third
quarter with a steal turned into a
layup and a 47-41 lead.
The rebounding effort of
Ellison and Allison along with the
defensive play of Davidson picked
up the Antelopes spirits. Ellison,
Allison, and Cribbs put together a
run of buckets for a 47-47 ball
game with 6:40 left on the clock.
The Dragons took over for a
short period of time and led 55-49
with four minutes left in the quarter.
Allison put an end to their
threat with a move into the paint for
two points and a shot from beyond
the perimeter. The score was now
55-54 with 3:17 left to play.
The only other point for the
period was a free shot from the
Dragons. The defenses had taken
over control of the game and held
each other’s offense to only one
shot per trip. The score by the end
of the third quarter was 56-54,
Paducah.
The Dragons took a four-point
lead to begin the final stanza and
held onto it for the next two-and-a-
half minutes (62-58).
Davidson had supplied the four
points for Whiteface during this
time.
A combination of points from
lgo and Allison along with
rebounds from Allison and Ellison
and the hustle of Davidson led to an
Antelope takeover during the next
minute of the game. Whiteface had
taken a 65-62 lead with 4:14 re-
maining to be played.
The Dragons were giten a
chance at the free throw line and
made the first of two free throws.
They would get the ball back and
score on the inbounds play to tie the
game at 65-65 with four minutes
left.
lgo and Cribbs wasted no time
in pulling the Antelopes back out
on top with a long shot and a layup,
69-65. Ellison added a free throw to
help keep Whiteface out front.
But a 3-pointer and a layup
from the Dragons would tie the
game once again with 2:30 left to
play (70-70).
Over the next 30 seconds, the
Dragons had taken control and used
their time at the free throw line
wisely. With 1:51 left in the game,
the Dragons led 73-70.
Cribbs then hit the 3-point shot
that tied the game and the rest is
history.
The Antelopes played well
defensively throughout the course
of the game against the much
quicker Dragons. The difference in
the game were the turnovers in the
final minute of the game.
Allison led the Antelopes with
26 points. Igo chipped in 15, Cribbs
with 13, and Davidson with 10
points.
Paducah was led by Bud Mor-
gan with 31 points.
