A program, costing 25
cents at the games, was
pring
printed up with local mer-
chants and gir.ners buying
ads and all proceeds filter-
ing into the Babe Ruth fund.
They needed about
S4.500 to put on the big
shot'—the sponsors that is—
and most of that has been
raised. It was garnered
through the souvenir issue,
the queen candidates and
good old outright ticket
sales.
Typical of this town—
when someone needs help,
or the town is in the spot-
light, the local citizenry
comes through.
And there is the nostal-
gic angle of it all. The
entire tourney and the
brochure to boot—is dedi-
cated to Barney Chadwick,
who died shortly before
seeing his dream come true-
having the state tourney in
Levelland.
Also on tap for the
week’s action is a conven-
tion to be held at the Carlo
Inn at 6:30 p.m. today. The
conclave will be headed by
State Director, A1 Kaparsek,
a former semi-pro ball

gives much of his time to
Babe Ruth baseball.
One of the main items
on the agenda is expected to
be discussion of a motion to
make the Texas Babe Ruth
Association itno two dis-
tricts, each having its own
tourney and champion.
Kaparsek also wants to
have a tourney for 13 and 14
year olds only, to be held on
the same basis as the
regular tourney.
The prexy says it would
cut down on costs and travel
time, besides giving more
boys a chance to parti-
cipate if the state were
divided into two sectors.
A new state director and
assistant director will be
elected at the meeting.
The delegstes will also
make th pairings for the
tourney and birth certi-
ficates will be shown.
A lot of people have
done a lot work to make this
tourney a success—let’s
hope a lot of people scurry
down to the park and find
out what’s going on.

It seems Lyndell has
three boys and felt his
boys should have a pony of
their own. So he went to
Abilene and bought one—
that’s innocent enough.
But to drive all the way
back with that poor animal
in the back seat of a ’64
Ford is cruelty—to the
animal, to the F'ord and to
motorists.
“We’d pass people and
we’d all sit back very
quietly and I’d nod as we
went around a car ani • then
just sit and wait for the
double take.’’
“It always came. Some
of the looks we got would
have won contests in any
photo exhibit.”
But, as always in a
case of this sort, there is
the thing th; X tops it all
off.
“On the way back we
ran up behind an army con-
voy of about a hundred or
so vehicles—that’s when the
fun started,” he said, gigg-
ling and cackling.
“All right,” said Wads-
worth, thinking somebody
had played a joke, “Who’s
the clown with my car?
Where is it?”
The faces were all
somber, and none even
hinted a hidden, mischiev-
ous smile.
“It didn’t take long to
realize that these guys
weren’t kidding. None of
them knew where the car
was,” he said.
They scurried over to
the police office and noti-
fied the authorities—City
Police, State Troopers, FBI-
even the local boy scouts.
They found the car
Wednesday, about 60 miles
east of El Paso—yeah, they
found the thieves too.
“What was funny about
it”, says Wadsworth, “Is
that my own car was right
next to it, with the keys in
it. I guess they hot wired
the Chevy though.”
Yep, the trip home was
a bit crowded.
