The Girls Scouts of Caprock
Council and University Medical
Center will host the 8* annual
Women of Distinction Awards
Dinner Thursday, Dec. 7th.
The dinner’s purpose is not only
to honor nine Women of
Distinction from the South Plains
but also to recognize a selection
group of senior Girl Scouts who
received scholarships for higher
education.
Included among the Women of
Distinction is Levelland resident
Audrey Jean Dunlap.
Mrs. Dunlap was bom in
Sundown. Although she moved all
across the South Plains as a child,
she settled in Levelland.
She later attended Abilene
Christian College.
She became active in the Girl
Scout program when her oldest
daughter was invited to join
Brownies. From that point on, the
honoree was hooked, continuing to
serve as troop leader, Service Unit
Cookie Manger and Service Unit
Day Camp Director.
In her free time away from her
duties as secretary for the Austin
Street Church of Christ in
Levelland, Mrs. Dunlap enjoys
w orking with children. In addition
to teaching Sunday school, she
volunteers for Hockley County
Family Outreach as well as Girl
Scouts.
She and her husband, Leroy,
have been married for 51 years and
have three children, eight
grandchildren and one great-
grandchild. .
All nine Women of Distinction
will be honored at a dinner held at
6:30 p.m. Thursday at the
University Medical Renter’s
Mdnturff Conference Center in
Lubbock. Each will be presented a
special aw ard designed exclusively
for Women of Distinction by artist
and scblptor Kenneth Wyatt.
(iirl Scouts of the Caprock
Council have presented this
prestigious award since ;l993.
Proceeds benefit Girl Scout
programs such as the Women of
Distinction Scholarship Fund with
two $1,000 and two $500
scholarships presented in 2000. The
Women of Distinction award
identifies and recognizes women
throughout the 18 county area
served by the Girl Scouts of
Caprock Council. Nominations
were sent to area civic, religious
and community organizations
across the South Plains and
recipients were chose following a
lengthy review process. Honoree
exemplify the Girl Scout Promise
and Law and are outstanding role
models for young women.
A Levelland High School
graduation, Merribeth Henry, is one
of this year’s scholarship recipients.
She is the daughter of Stephen and
Pat Henry and was salutatorian of
the 2000 graduating class. She has
been a member of Girl Scouts for
13 years, earning both her Silver
and Gold Awards. He is currently
attending Texas A&M University
and is majoring in Bio-
environmental Sciences with
aspirations of medial school.

Navy Admiral and Deputy Nation:
Executive Director of Girl Scon
USA.

year career in the U.S. Nav
attaining the rank of Real Admin
As one of the firs women assignt
to serve aboard ships early in h
career, she helped implement tl
program designed to smooth the
transition of women serving at sea.
She most recently served as the
senior U.S. military representative
to the Northern Atlantic Treaty
Organization (NATO) for the
Committee on Women in the
Militaiy. In her most recent
assignment, as Director of On Site
Inspection for the Defense Threat
Reduction Agency in Dulles, VA,
she led a team of over 650 people
charged with implementing all U.S.
Arms Control Treaties and
Agreements in over 50 nations
throughout the world.

Women’s Club ($200), Keith Paxton with Disciples in Action ($500),

This seminar is scheduled for 1
p.m., with participants meeting at
park headquarters. Instructor Gary
Johnston will discuss photography
in nature; then, with cameras in
hand, the class will explore the park
in search of photo opportunities.
Workshop fees are $20 for
adults. $15 for seniors or TCP
members, and $10 for children 12
and under. This includes the park
entrance fee.

CHRISTMAS GENEROSITY — Stan Weatherred, director of student
activities at South Plains College, presented a check during SPC's recent
Christmas tree lighting ceremony for more than $1,500 to Gayle Smith, on
the board of directors for Hockley County Family Outreach. The funds
will be used for the purchase of gifts for needy children this Christmas.
The funds were collected by SPC student organizations, and donors were
local citizens and businesses.
