County Food Box to kick
off Christmas food drive

COUNTRY FEST SET -- Restless Festus will be one of eight country
music groups showcasing student talent on Country Fest Monday (Dec. 4)
at South Plains College. Rock Fest on Tuesday, Dec. 5, will feature rock
ensembles and Rhythm and Blues Fest on Wednesday, Dec. 6, will feature
student R&B groups. Concert time is 6 p.m. nightly in the Tom T. Hall

The Hockley County Food Box
has set a goal of seven tons of food
for its Annual Christmas Food
Drive Dec. 4-9.
The Food Box depends on this
drive to accumulate enough non-
perishable food to feed the county’s
hungry through spring.
Any organizations, businesses or
individuals wishing to make
contributions during this time can
do so by bringing them to the Food
Box or calling 894-2616 or 894-
5845.
Special baskets will be set up at
United Supermarket to also receive
donations These baskets will be
taken care of by local church
volunteers from 10 a m to 6 p m
The baskets will be at the store
before and after these times to
receive donations also
The following churches and
organizations are participating in
the collection:
Monday: St. Paul Lutheran
Church and College Avenue Baptist
Church
Tuesday: St. Michael Catholic
Church
Wednesday: Second Baptist
Church, 13th and Ave. K Church of
Christ and Fifth Street Baptist

The Hockley County Food Box
was established in 1983 at the
request of the Ministerial Alliance
and various social service agencies
in the county. Retired Senior
Volunteer Personnel (RSVP)
provide the majority of the 35
volunteers who currently keep the
Food Box open five days a week,
three hours a day.
Annually, the Food Box serves
approximately 700 families and
3500 individuals from Hockley
County. It also provides monthly
food boxes to senior citizens on
fixed incomes and serves as the
distribution center for USDA
commodities
The Food Box is located in the
rear of the Carver Learning Center.

The Rose Garden Club met Nov
16 in the home of Sarah Jo Lewis.
The meeting was called to order
by club president Betty Medford.
Minutes of the last meeting were

Palmer, who gave a program on the
Osage orange". According to
Palmer, the tree is a common sight
on the great plains today Bclore °

also perfect for the construction of

addition, the fruit of the trees is a
favorite with squirrels.
The common name for the osage
orange is hedge apple or "bodark”.

Thrash and Lorena Welch.

Ellis in Levelland on Friday, Dec.

The house concert will be held
from 7 to 9 p.m. and will feature
Paul Davidson, Danny Williams
and another surprise or two.
House concerts bring quality
performers into the setting of a
living room. It’s an age-old concept
being revived around the country
where friends gather and have an
opportunity to interact with artists
on a more intimate level.
The house concert i$ being
hosted by Joe Gillis and Jean
Warren, accomplished musicians
themselves.
Reservations are required
because seating is limited.
Admission is free but the hosts ask
that each person attending bring
one canned food item to be donated
to the South Plains Food Box.
