Local businessman
sets up scholarship
Kenneth Parmer, co-owner and
general manager of Polly’s in
Leveiland, has established a new
scholarship at South Plains College
to benefit student performers in the
college’s unique commercial music
program.
Parmer recently presented
Steve Bryant, director of
development at SPC, with a $ l ,000
contribution to establish the Polly’s
Scholarship with the South Plains
College Foundation.
“The college has meant a great
deal to this community and I think
it’s important that we support the
college and students in any way
possible,” said Parmer, an SPC
alumnus. “I want to challenge
other business people and groups
in the community to demonstrate
their support as well.”
Parmer said his family has
enjoyed the student talent that has
been showcased in the college’s
commercial music program for
many years and is aware that
students in the program need
financial assistance. He said he
chose to name the scholarship in
honor of his mother because of her
long-time association with the
college and admiration of the
commercial music program. Polly
Parmer retired from SPC in 1993
after serving 27 years as a biology
instructor.
John Hartin, chairperson of the
Creative Arts Department and the
founding faculty member for
SPC’s unique program in country
and bluegrass music, was present
for the scholarship presentation. 1
continue to be amazed by the
generosityof our supporters. Words
simply cannot express our
gratitude,” he said. “This
scholarship will provide a student
with just the help they need to
reach their goal.”
The scholarship will be
presented each semester to a
student selected by departmental
faculty, said Bryant “We are very
grateful for Kenneth’s generosity
and support of the college,” said
Bryant. “Contributions of this
nature help us attract and retain
talented students.”
