loss to the B g
“We have
over the fint five weeks (of the
season) to have shown improve-
ment,” said Lobo head coach Mike
Speck. "This is the fint week we
have taken a step backwards.”
The Lobos were still suffering
from deep bruises and strains from
the previous week's game. Person-
nel changes were made on defense
to keep players from getting injured
more seriously. The playen that
stepped in did their jobs but there
were moments of a break down in
communication.
“We tried to make it simple on
offense and defense this week,”
said Speck. “We may have over
done it. Everybody made mistakes.
Obviously, the buck stops here!”
Speck retorted. > .
The Lobos knew going into
Friday night's game that they had to
come out and play four full quarters
against the aggressive Steers. It was
not until the third quarter before the
Lobos began to show signs of
aggressiveness. Levelland had only
15 total yards of offense in the first
half. They came out in the second
half and played much better,
managing 92 yards of offense.
The Steers rolled over
Levelland in the first half for a total
of 187 yards of offense. The Lobo
defense stepped it up in the second
half and held the Steers to only 70
yards of offense.
Big Spring would receive the
opening kickoff. They began on
their own 28 yard line. Their
auickness off the ball set the Lobo
defense back on their heels. The
Steers picked up three first downs
over three plays down to the Lobo
33 yard line.
Jaydee Franklin broke through
the line and dropped the Steer run-
ner for a five yard loss and an in-
complete pass led to a fourth down
situation for the Steers on the Lobo
30 yard line. But, just when things
were looking up for the Lobos, the
Steers burst their bubble with a big
play for a first down.
Big Spring was on the Lobo 15
yard line and eyeing the endzone.
The Lobo defense buckled down
and held them over the next three

downs with key tackles by Law-
rence Johnson and Christian
Coronado. The Steers were faced
with another fourth down situation
and four yards to go for a first from
the Lobo nine yard line. This time
the Steers not only converted the
play into a first down but scored on
the run by Jaroe Parnell. Jason
Woodruff added the kick after
touchdown for a 7-0 lead with 6:56
left in the first quarter.
Level land’s offense took over
on their own 29 yard line after the
kickoff.
Big Spring had done their
homework and keyed in on Jason
Tezeno. He ran to the right and only
gained two yards. He ran to the left
and gained a yard. Kevin Romero
then went to the air and found
Tezeno for a five yard gain. It was
shy of the first down by two yards
so the punting unit was sent onto
the field.
The snap was low. The punter’s
knee touched the ground on the
catch and the whistles blew signal-
ing a 12 yard loss back to the Lobo
25 yard line.
Big Spring settled in and went
to work against the Levelland
defense. They gained five yards
here and four yards there until they
were down to the Lobo 11 yard line
with a first down. Three plays later,
the Steers were across the endzone
on a three yard run by Parnell. The
kick was good by Woodruff for a
14-0 ball game with 1:49 left in the
first quarter.
Levelland tired to move the ball
after the kickoff as the first quarter
came to a close. The Lobos were
held around the 20 yard stripe and
had to punt as the second quarter
began. Tye Bawcom booted a 40
yarder to place the Steers on their
side of the 50 yard line.
The Levelland defense had
some bright spots throughout the
next series of plays. Kirk Noles,
Joseph Hutchinson, Jessie Rodri-
guez, all made some key tackles.
The Steers, however, had some
slippery moves and squeezed out
another first down on a fourth down
situation from the Lobo three yard
line. On the next handoff, quarter-
back Jason Choate, kept the pigskin
and pushed his way across the
goalline for the touchdown from
one yard out. The kick was good by
Woodruff for a 21-0 lead with 7:47

left in the first half of play.
Levelland stalled with the •
running game. They went to the air
only to nave it intercepted on the
second play from the line of scrim-
mage.
Big Spring completed a couple
of short passes and moved from
their 35 yard line to their 49 yard
line. They were going for the pass
again when Craig Alexander
reached up for the interception at
the Lobo 36 yard line.
This sparked the Lobo offense.
Romero scrambled around on the
first play and gained three yards. He
completed a five yard pass to
Lawrence Johnson up to the 44 yard
line. The next play was 'an
incomplete pass and Levelland was
just sny of a first down on the
fourth down play. Speck called for
the play to go for the first down.
Romero kept the ball on the snap
and ran up the middle for a gain of
three yards and the first down.
The good luck did not last long
for the Lobos. The next three plays
were incomplete passes and a pass
for zero yards forcing the Lobos to
punt. Bawcom’s punt sailed down
to the Big Spring 16 yard line. The
Steers could only return it to the 23
yard line due to the coverage by the
Lobo punting unit. .
The Steers tried a couple of
pass plays and scrambled around
but could get no where. They had to
punt away as well.
Levelland had a couple more
attempts on offense with nine sec-
onds left in the first half. Tezeno
gained eight yards before stopping
the clock with two seconds left. The
final play of the game was a ‘hail
Mary’ pass that fell incomplete.
The Steers kept their 21-0 lead
as the teams headed into their re-
spective lockerrooms.
Levelland received the second
half kickoff and moved the ball
from their own 30 yard line out to
their 37 yard line. Tezeno put
together several runs for some nice
yardage and Romero completed a
short pass to Johnson. A couple of
penalties would stop the Lobos and
force them into a punting situation.
The Steers took over on their
own 34 y. d line. They moved out
to the 42 yard line but would suffer
two penalties of their own. The
quarterback attempted a long run
around the left end of the line but
Justin Honesto chased him down
and made the tackle. The Steers
decided to punt away.
Levelland was on their 27 yard
line with six minutes left in the
quarter. Romero spied Johnson
down the field and threw a long 36
yard pass over into Steer territory.
Johnson took the next handoff and
ran right for a gain of 14 yards to
the Steer 27 yard line. Romero
dropped a short six yard pass into
Rodriguez’s arms followed by a
gain of five yards from Tezeno for
a first down at the Big Spring 16
yard line. Tezeno spun around the
left side of the opponents and
sprinted 16 yards down the sideline
for the touchdown. Bawcom added
the extra point kick to put the Lobos
on the scoreboard, 21-7, with 2:45
remaining in the third quarter.
The Lobos defense took their
cue over the next series of downs
and held the Steers to only three
plays. Chase Alexander, Craig Al-
exander, Kevin Noles, Honesto. and
Hutchinson all made some big de- *
fensive tackles.
Levelland fielded the punt at
the 40 yard line and the Steers were
flagged with a five yard penalty.
Levelland had the ball at their own
45 yard line and moved it to the
Steer 39 yard line on a pass interfer-
ence call as the quarter ended.
But the next couple of plays
were for no gain and the third run
was for loss of yards as the Lobos
had to punt from the Steer 41 yard
line.
Big Spring put the ball up in
the air on their first play from
scrimmage. Johnson was there for
the interception and returned it to
the Steer 37 yard line. On the ensu-
ing tackle, the ball popped loose
and the Steers recovered.
They were back on the field
offensively and kept the ball low to
the ground. They gained a first
down and were in Lobo territory.
Honesto had had enough. He
caught the Steer receiver behind the
line of scrimmage for a four yard
loss. He then sacked the quarter-
back for a 20 yard loss and caused
a fumble. Big Spring managed to
recover the ball but would'have to
punt.
Level land’s offense sputtered
and went three downs and out. .
The Lobos were deep in their
own territory for the punt. It sailed
32 yards but the Steers had good
field position at the Lobo 47 yard
line.
Big Spring steadily ground out
the yardage and ate up time on the
clock as they moved closer to the
endzone. On the eight play of the
drive, Woodruff scored on a one
yard run. He added the kick for a
28-7 ballgame with 1:26 left on the
clock.
Coronado had a big return on
the kickoff to give the Lobo offense
a start at midfield. Romero scram-
bled for a gain of seven yards and
then went to the air. The pass was
intercepted and the Steers ran out
the remaining 50 seconds of the
game for the 28-7 victory.
Levelland is now 2-1 in district
action. The Steers are 3-0. The
Lobos will battle Estacado on
Thursday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at
Lowery Field in Lubbock.

Bearden for the 22-0 lead at the
