Levelland 7th grade teams show improvement
The Levelland seventh grade
football teams have competed well
the past .several weeks. All three
teams have shown improvement
and individual players have stepped
in and played with a lot of heart.
“They are learning
playing hard,” said Coach Matt
Reed. “They are giving it all they
got."
The Black team have moved to
2-2-1 for the season. They beat
Plainview Blue on Sept. 26, 6-0.
J.J. Gonzales scored on a 45
yard sweep around the right side in
the third quarter. Raymundo
Paredez made a good downfield
block that made the touchdown
possible.
“It was an entire team defen-
sive effort," said Coach Reed.
Matt Lynn played well on both
sides of the iootball.
The Black team suffered their
first loss of the season to their
classmates on Oct. 3. The White
team won 14-12.
“The Black team did a good job
of coming back," said Hussaum
Najjar.
Juan Gonzales scored one
touchdown. Landon Luna threw a
long scoring pass to J.L. Reyes for
the other six points.
The White team scoring was
done by Chris Williams. David
Young caught the two-point pass
from R.C. Garza for the difference
in the ball game.
Nehemiah Sanchez did a good
job of blocking. The offensive line
played well for the white team.
The Black team fought in a
tough battle on Tuesday, Oct. 10,
against Plainview White. Plainview
won 20-14 on a last minute
touchdown.
Juan Gonzales scored the first
touchdown of the game. Landon
Luna added the other touchdown
and the two-point conversion to
give Levelland a 14-12 lead.
The young Lobo team was
playing well defensively until
Plainview made a big play in the
final minute of the game to win 20-
14.
Abel Lopez played well at the
defensive tackle spot. Ray Mendez
led the offensive line.
The Black team will be open on
the 17*. They will be at Plainview
on the 24"’ at 5 p.m.

The White team has an overall
record of 3-1 for the season.
The White team had a break on
the 26*. They came back on Oct. 3
and beat Levelland’s Black team,
14-12. As mentioned above, the
two-point pass from R.C. Garza to
David Young was the difference in
the ball game.
The White team picked up their
third win of the season with a 30-28
victory over Plainview Blue on
Tuesday the 10th.
“Both teams had good running-
backs and the offenses executed
well,” said Coach Reed.
Levelland only had to punt
once throughout the entire game.
Garza scored two touchdowns
and Sanchez scored two. Garza had
one two-point conversion. Sanchez
with two two-point conversions.
Other top performers in the
game were Nathaniel Covarrubias
and Chris Williams.
The White team will be at
Frenship on Tuesday. They will
host Frenship on Tuesday the 24th
on 5 p.m.

The Red team has an overall
record of 2-2-1.
The Red team beat Frenship
Gold by a score of 14-6.
Levelland's defensive effort of
Manuel Martinez, Justin Turner,
Nehemiah Sanchez, James Cornish
and Trevor Fortner did a good job
of containing Frenship throughout
the first quarter of play.
Sanchez scored on the first play
from scrimmage for the young team
on a 70 yard run. Will Weiland
added the two-point conversion for
an 8-0 lead.in the first.
Frenship scored in the second
quarter after a long drive but the
Lobo defense kept them from add-
ing the two-point conversion.
The score at the break was 8-6,
Levelland.
On the opening kickoff of the
third quarter, Sanchez returned the
kick 65 yards for the score. The
two-point attempt failed but
Levelland led 14-6
Juan Salazar and Martinez led
the defense through the third quar-
ter.
The defenses controlled the
final quarter.
Levelland’s offense ate up the
clock in the final 2:20 minutes of
the game. Cornish and Sanchez did
a good job of carrying the ball.
The Red tean) hosted Frenship
Blue on Oct. 3 and won 6-0.
Levelland’s offense had control
of the ball for most of the first quar-
ter. Weiland and Cornish had some
good carries.
Joe Martinez helped to give the
ball to the Lobo offense with a fum-
ble recovery early in the quarter.
Fortner, Clay Hutchinson,
Cornish, and Ryan Smith played
well defensively.
Levelland lost control of the
football in the second quarter on a
fumble.
Frenship hung onto it for about
five minutes but the Lobo defense
kept the Tigers out of the endzone.
The score at the half was 0-0.
Frenship would have control of
the ball for most of the third quar-
ter. They pushed against
Levelland’s defense but did not
break them.
Levelland’s offense was on the
field as the final quarter began.
Levelland had to punt early in
the fourth. Frenship fumbled the
catch and Cornish quickly recov-
ered for the Lobos.
Levelland put together a scor-
ing drive from the Tiger 38.
Weiland completed a 13 yard pass
to Chris Galindo down to the 25.
On the fourth play of the drive,
Weiland fired a shot to Justin
Turner for the 28 yard touchdown.
The two-point pass failed but
Levelland was on the scoreboard, 6-
0.
Frenship tried to move the ball
quickly but was stopped by the
Lobo defense. Rusty Rumbaugh
intercepted the Tiger pass. The ball
was fumbled on the tackle and
Frenship recovered. But, time ran
out and Levelland won 6-0.
The Red team had a strong
defensive game against Plainview
Red on Tuesday the 10th. The Bull-
dogs intercepted a Lobo pass with
37 seconds left in the game deep in
Red team territory. They scored on
the next play to win the game 20-
12.
Plainview scored on the open-
ing kickoff after a 91 yard return.
Levelland was moving the ball
up and down the field ana were on
the Bulldog 19 yard line when they
threw an interception.
The Lobo defense stopped the
Bulldog offense deep in their own
territory. Levelland took over at the
Dog 17 as the second quarter be-
gan.
Cornish dug out six yards.
Scott Johnson took the handoff, ran
to his left, and scored on an 11 yard
touchdown run. The two-point at-
tempt failed. The game was now
tied at 6-6. /
After the kickoff, Turner inter-
cepted the Plainview pass.
Levelland ran out the remainder
of the first half of action.
Two key passes from Weiland
in the third quarter set up a scoring
run. Weiland completed a 10 yard
pass to Johnson followed by a big
36 yard snag Turner. Cornish
capped the drive with a five yard
run into the endzone. Levelland was
up 12-6 with 2:27 left in the third
quarter.
Plainview scored at the start of
the fourth quarter to lead 14-12.
Levelland was moving the ball
well when they threw an intercep-
tion.
Plainview scored on the first
play from scrimmage on a 22 yard
run (20-12).
Time ran out and the Bulldogs
won 20-12.
The Red team will be at
Plainview on Tuesday the 17*.
They will be open on the 24*.

The Whitharral Junior Varsity
Panthers picked up their fifth
straight victory of the season with a
23-12 non-conference win over
Cotton Center on Oct. 5.
Whitharral set the mood of the
game early with 12 points in the
first quarter. David Moore scored
on a seven yard run and Dusty Rob-
inson added another rushing touch-
down.
Victory Portillo threw a 12 yard
pass to Marshall Armes in the sec-
ond quarter. Zane Long split the
uprights for the extra two poirits
and a 20-0 lead.
Cotton Center slipped away
and ran 45 yards for the score be-
fore the break. They added the kick
for a 20-8 game.
Cotton Center hit a 28 yard
field goal in the third quarter for a
20-12 ball game.
Moore scored the final touch-

Whitharral ended with 221
yards of offense. The defense held
Cotton Center to only 76 yards. -
Moore had 119 yards rushing
on 23 carries. Dusty Robison with
84 yards on seven carries.
Bobby Martinez completed one
pass for five yards. Portillo com-
pleted one pass for 12 yards.
Marshall Armes and Dusty
Robison were the receivers.
Defensive standouts were Chad
Nichols, Jason Ledbetter, Portillo,
and Robison. Portillo and Robison
had an interception each. Nichols
recovered a fumble.
The Junior Varsity is 5-0 for
the season. They were at Cotton
Center on the 12th. They will ho$t
