SPC cross country begins year at West Texas A&M
The road to the NJCAA Cross
Country Chea^wnmhijM in
Lansing. Mich., begins Thursday
for the Texans and Lady Texans at
the West Texas A*M Buffalo
Stampede Crass Country
Invitational in Canyon.
The meet will begin at S p.m.
for the three-mile women’s course
and 5:30 pm for the four-mile
men’s course.
In his 18th year with SPC,
head coach James Morris expects
big things out of both his men’s
and women’s teams.
“We should be competitive
nationally,” Morris said. “Our
experience on both teams is very
good and everybody on the team
thinks they can perform well and
shoot for the national title.”
The top returnees for the
men’s team are Shadrack Kimeli,
last year’s fifth place finisher at
nationals, and Simon Kfrnata, who
finished 10th. Abo playing key
roles will be Brandon Mcnking,
Silverus Kimeli, Thomas Sang.
Juan DeBastos and Marco Torres.
Sang took 21 st place at the national
meet and ran a 26:12 while
DeBastos finished 25th with a time
of26:35.

Juan Reyes, from Rockspringe,
should be the top newcomer for foe
Texans who have four frestmnan
runners. At Rockspringe. Reyes ran
a 4:37 in the 1600 mid was a state
qualifier in the 800.
Marissa Hernandez, Kelly
Temple and Julie Simone are
expected to lead a talented
women’s squad. Simone, who
finished 29th, had the Lady Texans
best finish at last year’s
chmpkmship with a time of 21^)0.
Hernandez took 48th place with a
time of 21:21 and Temple finished
68th with a time of 22 JO. Temple
also competed well in the NJCAA
Women’s Marathon
Championships and finished
eighth.
Overall, the Lady Texans
placed eighth at the cross country
championships despite the
withdrawal of ft
best runner.

The Eagles started out a little
flat and then picked up the pace as
the scrimmage progressed.
“We made some mistakes but
nothing that can’t be fixed. We are
not discouraged,” Jackson said re-
assuringly.
During the 15/15 series of
downs, Morton scored once. Then
both teams had a shot at the end-
zone from the goalline. Morton
scored twice. The Eagles scored on
a run up the middle by Chris
Thomas.
A live quarter was played with
the clock naming continually.
Morton scored once. The Eagles
moved the ball but could not get it
into the endzone.
“We are trying out a new de-
fense,” said Jackson. “We me still a
little inexperienced. The kids

The Engles are ’realty to turn
the lights on and get started’, ac-
cording to Jackson.
Ropes will begin the 1999 sea-
son this Friday at Spur beginning at
8 p.m.
Spur’s talented quarterback was
a state qualifier in the hurdles.
“They have a good running back
and their big up front,” Jackson
remarked. “They are weft-coached.”
Ropes will go out and do what
they do — hard-hitting football.
“We will get after them. We are
going to try and put the boll into
Thomas’ hands,” Jackson said.
The Eagles will also put the
ball into the air some throughout
the game. Other carriers for the
game will be Zach France and
George Velez.
Jackson feeh that the Eagles

“We are in pretty good health
and ready to play for real !* Jackson
exclaimed.
The Junior Varsity and Junior
High Eagles will begin their season
on Thursday at home. The Junior
High will host Spur at 5 p.m. The
JV will host New Deal’s freshmen
at 7 pm.
The varsity will be at Spur on
Friday, Sept 3, at 8 pm.
