for J.B. Kemp son, 81
Services for J.B. Kempson, 81, and two brothers, George Kempson
of Levelland, were held at 10 a.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the First
United Methodist Church with Rev.
Jesse Hodge, pastor, and Bill
Billingsley, officiating.
Graveside services were held at
4 p.m. Tuesday in Rowe Cemetery
at Heldey.
and Norris Kempson, and a sister,
Ruth Kempson.
He carried the chain for the
Levelland football team for many
years and ran the clock for local
basketball games.
As of July 1, 1996, Mr.
Kempson had donated 40 gallons of

He was bom on October 6,1917
in Hedley. He moved to Levelland
in 1926 and graduated from
Levelland High School in 1936. He
graduated from McMurry College
at Abilene with a bachelor of arts in
mathematics in 1949. He was
certified to teach elementary and
high school mathematics in August
of 1949. He received his master’s
degree from Texas Tech in August,
1952.
He taught school at Morton
through May, 1956. He then came
to Levelland where he taught until
1984.
He drove a school bus for 34
The total with military and civilian
blood donations totaled over 44
gallons.
He was a member of First
United Methodist Church in
Levelland. He was an active
volunteer for the Hockley County
Food Box, Hockley County Senior
Citizens, local nursing homes and
the hospital. He was active in many
types of community service work.
He was named an Honorary
Member of the Levelland Rotary
Club in recognition of “service
above self on Nov. 12, 1991.
He is survived by two sisters,
Leola Petty and Ruby Kempson,
both of Brownfield; a brother, Ned
Kempson of Whitewright; sisters-
in-law: Lucy Kempson of
Brownfield and Ann Grau of
years. His students achieved many Newport Beach, Calif.; several
nieces and nephews, great-nieces
and nephews and great-great nieces
and nephews.

contests in mathematics.
He served in the United States
Army Air Corps from 1942 until
1945 as an aircraft mechanic. He
flew bombing missions as an on-
board mechanic. He was stationed
in Toronto, Italy.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, Isom and Bertha Kempson,

1999 in North Central Baptist Hos-
pital, San Antonio, TX.
She was bom on Mar. 6, 1942.

Glenda Raye Shafer
She was preceded in death by her
son, James Alick Shafer, her twin
sister, Linda Kaye Crooks, her par-
ents, P.H. and Verda Ivey.
She is survived by two daugh-
ters, Tonya Shafer-Cole of Lubbock
and Carla Payne of San Antonio; a
sister, Gaye Benson of Lubbock; a
brother. Dean Ivey of Levelland;
three grandchildren, Lia Payne and
Eric Payne both of San Antonio,
and Kendra Shafer-Cole of Lub-
bock; her uncles, Willie Jack Ivey,
T.C. Ivey, and Joe Ivey, and her
aunt, Joyce Ann Schoggins.
The family will receive visitors
at 6122 35* St., Lubbock, from 4-6
p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999.
About $5,000 worth of fuel was
spilled and burned Monday morning
at an oilfield lease in the 2600 block
of Olympic Road.
No one was injured.
The incident occurred while a
heater treater unit was operating at
the site, said Levelland Fire Chief
Thurman Davis.
The fire was out by the time
Levellandfirefightersarrivedonthe
scene.
