PROCLAMATION OF MAY
AS FAIR HOUSING MONTH
WHEREAS Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 as
amended, prohibits discrimination in
housing and declares it a national policy to
provide, within constitutional limits, for fair
housing in the United States; and
WHEREAS The principle of Fair Housing is not only
national law and national policy, but a
fundamental human concept and
entitlement for all Americans; and
WHEREAS The thirty-second anniversary of this
National Fair Housing Law during the
month of May, provides an opportunity for
all Americans to recognize that complete
success in the goal of equal housing
opportunity can only be accomplished with
the help and cooperation of all Americans.
NOW, THEREFORE, WE, the Commissioners Court of
Hockley County, do proclaim May as Fair Housing Month
in Hockley County and do hereby urge all the citizens of
this locality to become aware of and support the Fair
Housing law.

The 18-member orchestra,
directed by Jon Johnson,
chairperson of the Fine Arts
Department, is comprised of SPC
music faculty, former SPC
students, retired public school band
directors, musicians and vocalists
from different walks of life.
“This event started ten years
ago, and we’ve built up quite a
following,” said Johnson. “What
we try to do is play favorite tunes
from the swing era, and as much as
possible, perform them the way
there were originally played by the
various bands that made the tunes
possible.”
The group performs the big
band classics made famous by the
Memorial
will be held
this Friday
South Plains College’s law
enforcement program will honor
the 10 Texas officers and 130
officers nationwide who died last
year in the line of duty during an
annual Peace Officer Memorial
Ceremony Friday (May 5).
The memorial is scheduled at
10 a.m. at the main entrance of the
campus, 1401 S. College Avenue.
The public is invited to attend.
Stacy Lynn Brown, an area law
enforcement officer who died in a
recent car accident on his way to
work, will be among those
memorialized.
“We want to show our respect
to the fallen officers and to their
families,” said Randy Fesperman,
assistant professor of law
enforcement technology. “We also
hope to increase public awareness
of the sacrifices made by law
enforcement officers throughout
the state and nation.”
An SPC student honor guard
will fire a 21-gun salute, lay a
wreath at the base of the campus
flags and lower the college flat to
half-mast.
“Amazing Grace” will be
played on bagpipes to end the
somber event.
Kindergarten
round-up set
for Wednesday
Kindergarten Round-Up will be
held on Wednesday, May 3, from
8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at West Early
Childhood Center.
All children who will be 5
years of age on or before Sept. 1,
2000 are encouraged to pre-register.
Bring your child's birth
certificate, current immunization
(shot) record, and social security
card. Copies of these documents
will be made for our files.
