Independent School District will
begin holding public hearings on
the Academic Excellence Indicator
System The AEIS is an annual
rating of state school districts by the
Texas Education Agency . The state
agency looks at such criteria as
attendance figures, dropout rates
and student achievement of TAAS
exams

the chance to discuss the report

College Financial Aid Office has received an On The Ball Award from the
Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board For its efforts in dispersing
$80,000 in funds this fell to SPC students through the new statewide Texas

2 pm Saturday Nov. 13, a Second
Baptist Church. Rev. Jerry Howe,
poster, and Rev Hwold Harmon,
paster. First Baptist Church of
Whttefecr, officiated the service.
Burial followed in the City of
Levelland Cemetery under the di-
rection of Geo. C. Price Funeral
Directors.
He died at 7 am Wednesday.

He was born on Oct 25. 1921
at Thaha. TX. He moved to
Hockley County in 1930 from
Thalia. He was married to Ruby
Jean McBride on June 20. 1943 in
Sundown. He was a W orld W ar II
Army veteran. He was a retired
’ of the Second
Baptist Church of Levelland.
He was preceded m death by
two sisters. An Lance and Shirley
Lewis.

on Academic Excellence Indicators
The South Plains College
Financial Aid Office in Levelland
has recei' id an “On-the-Ball-
Award from the Texas Higher
Education Coordinating Board for
its efficiency in dispersing $80,000
in grant money to students this fell
through the new statewide TEXAS
(Toward Excellence Access and
Success) Grant.
The seven-member staff
received the award during the
recent Texas Association of
Student Financial Aid
Administrators state conference in
Houston.
"We are delighted to receive
this award, and we are also
delighted to receive the funds to
help students get a boost on their
education." said Jim Ann
Batenhorst. director of financial
aid at SPC. Staff members in the
Financial Aid Office who received
the On the Ball Award are
Batenhorst Lynda Foster, loan
coordinator, financial aid advisors
Charlene Hogue. Micki Smith.
Allene Abbe. Glenda Hensley and
Sherry Israel. Abbe also serves as
work study coordinator.
SPC was able to help 80
students this fell with the new
grant and will be eligible to receive
additional funds after Dec. 1.
The grant targets students who
have graduated from a
recommended or advanced high
school curriculum and who are in
financial need.
Student awards for each
institution we based on statewide
average tuition and fees.

Community college students
receive an average $470 a
semester, university students
SI.200 a semester and full-time
technical college students $700 a
semester, she said
Funds for the grant were
approved in mid-summer.
According to information from
the THECB. die state legislature is
so serious about the grant that it
plans to pump several million
dollars into the project over the
next five years
Once students are accepted
into the program, they can remain
for six years or until they have
graduated from a university. They
can reapply each semester and be
accepted automatically if they
continue to meet academic
standards and show a financial
need, said Batenhorst. The Texas
Grant can also be combined with
other financial aid and scholarship
assistance programs to help pay the
way through college for these
students, she added.
The next crop of students
eligible to apply for the Texas
Grant are those who have
graduated m Dec. 98 through May.
1999 and plan to attend college in
the spring of2000.

She died on Wednesday . Nov.
10. 1999 at Hickory House in
Levelland.
She was bom Jan. 19. 1910 in
Wichita Falls. TX She married
Lonnie Herbert Durrett Sr.. Oct. 4.
1928. in Wichita Falls. She was a
lifelong Texans and had lived in the
L evelland area since 1929. She was
a homemaker. She had been a mem-
ber of the First Baptist Church in
Levelland for over 65 years.
She was preceded in death by
her husband. Lonnie, on Jan. I.
1981. and one sister. Ora Mae
Swan.
She is survived by a son.
Lonnie Herbert Durrett Jr. of New
Jersey; four daughters. Flora Mae
Martin of Guatemala. Wanda P.
Fincannon and Mary Lav ana Blair
both of Levelland. and Ludia Ella
McCutchon of Ohio; 19 grandchil-

Langehennig placed fourth in
after-dinner speaking, and Abbott
placed fourth in informative

semi-finals in the impromptu
speaking contest.
They were competing with
more than 200 students from
colleges and universities
throughout Texas and Okfehoma.
“There were a lot of schools,
big guns who were competing and
our students did very well for their
first contest of the fall semester,"
said Laura Dickinson, instructor in
speech and the forensic team
coach.
Four SPC students will
compete Nov . 19-21 at the Patriot
Games Speech Tournament at the
University of Texas in Tyler. They
