The Whitharral Panthers
opened district play this past
Tuesday with a 72-55 loss to
Meadoxv.
Whitharral found the long shot
favorable in the first quarter against
Meadow and led 17-13 at the
buzzer. Tres Cisneros and Josh
Brooks combined for three 3-point
buckets.
Meadow continued to drive the
ball into the middle of the court and
used their height advantage to pull
into a tie with Whitharral by the
midway point, 31-31.
Meadow’s aggressiveness and
inside play took over control of the
game in the second half leading to
the victory.
Brooks paced the Panthers on
the scoreboard with 12 points. Will
Kristinek was next with 11 points
and Cisneros added 10 points.
Whitharral is 9-9 overall and 0-

65 victory.
“We played well,” said Lobo
head coach Darren French. “They
(Canyon) just got some big hits and
did some things right. They were
stronger than we were on the
inside.”
Canyon presented the Lobos
with an offense they had not seen
all season. It took the Lobos a little
longer than hoped to make the ad-
justments necessary.
“The kids played hard and
well,” French said.
Levelland and Canyon traded
the first couple of shots to begin
Tuesday’s contest. Lawrence
Johnson made two free throws and
Shannon Whitfield drove in for the
layup for a 4-4 game with four min-
utes left in the period.
The Eagles then pulled out to a
four-point lead with back-to-back
buckets (8-4).
Jessie Rodriguez responded
with a bank shot and was fouled in
the attempt. His free throw was
good for an 8-7 game.
Craig Alexander was helping
the Lobos with his defensive effort.
Canyon used their inside
toughness to add another two points
on a rebounded shot.
Mark Romero and Ricky
Ochoa answered with two more
shots from the field. Levelland was
now on top, 11-10.
Canyon traded shots with Wes-
ley Wise and a 13-12 game with 50
seconds left in the period.
The Eagles ended the period
with a fouled layup adding the free
throw. The score was 15-13, Ea-
gles, going into the second period.
Canyon hit the first shot of the
second period.
Levelland continued to pressure
the Eagles and Curtis Dent forced a
couple of turnovers. Wise stepped
in and hit the short jumper from in
front of the hoop. Dent forced an-
other Canyon turnover and Romero
put back a rebounded shot for a 17-
17 game.
Canyon slipped in a jumpshot
followed by a 3-point bomb by Ro-
driguez.
The Eagles had a short run of
four points as they took over the
lead once again (23-20).
Levelland continued to run
their offense and C.J. Queen added
three points from the charity stripe.
A nice rebounded tip from Romero
tied the game up att 25-25 with 2:40
remaining in the half.
Scoring was back-and-forth in
the final two minutes. Alexander
connected on a 12 foot shot fol-
lowed by two long attempts from
Stephen Lynn. By the end of the
first half the game was tied at 31-
31.
The pace in the third quarter
was much quicker. After a free shot
by Canyon, Johnson drained a 3-
point shot for a 34-32 Lobo lead.
Canyon and Levelland worked
back and forth for the next minute.
Levelland remained on top by a
bucket (38-36) after shots from
Johnson and Romero.
The Eagles luck began to im-
prove with a 3-point shot and two
separate trips to the free throw line
for four more points. They had a
43-38 lead with 4:51 left in the
period.
A fouled layup by Romero with
the added free throw brought
Levelland back to within two points
of the Eagles, (43-41).
Canyon hit a free throw fol-
lowed by a layup from Rodriguez.
The Eagles then put together a
seven point run and a 51 -43 lead.
Levelland added points from
Lynn, Wise, and Ochoa for the re-
mainder of the quarter but the Ea-
gles had found some luck from the
3-point range and ended the quarter
with a 62-51 lead.
The Eagles carried this luck
over into the final stanza. They
would sink the first five points of
the quarter and go up by a 67-51
score.
Over the next three minutes,
Levelland cut the Eagle lead back
to eight points with two 3-point
shots from Ochoa and a 3-point
shot from Rodriguez. He was
fouled during the attempt and made
the free throw for a four-point play.
But, the Eagles forced a couple
of Lobo turnovers and kept
Levelland off the scoreboard for the
next minute.
The Lobos were forced to foul
the 'Eagles in an attempt to get the
ball back. The Eagles used their
time at the free throw line for the
eventual 83-65 final score.
Rodriguez led the Lobos with
12 points. Romero added 11 points
and Ochoa ended with 10 points.
Levelland fell to 6-18 for the
season and 1-1 in district. The Ea-
gles are 12-8 and 1-1. Levelland
was at Plainview on Friday and will
host Randall on Tuesday, Jan.. 25 at
8 p.m.

God bless you. Regularly attending religious services seems to extend the
lives of congregants. A study at the University of Texas noted a gain of some
seven years, and as much as 14 years for African-Americans.
Similar study at Duke University said that frequent attendance seemed to
cut the risk of dying by 28 percent.
New urine test approved by the FDA can help doctors differentiate between
Streptococcus pneumoniae and a viral infection and determine whether
antibiotics are advisable.

Raloxifene, a drug used to prevent osteoporosis, can also cut the risk of
spinal fractures up to 50 percent in women who already have the disease, a
three-year study found.

A 30-vear-old drug -- Aldactone — turned out to he so effective against
congestive heart failure that a Michigan study was stopped early to report
the results.
