Make Your Christmas Complete
A Christmas poem...
♦
(Editor’s Note: Mrs. Irene Carter, who has lived in the Sundown area
since 1933, brought us the following poem which was written by her
granddaughter, DeAnn Bernhard. Mrs. Bernhard graduated from Sundown
High School and South Plains College, is married and has two daughters.
Her parents are Bill and Deloris Griffin of Kingsland and formerly of
Sundown. In her note to her grandmother, Mrs. Bernhard wrote: “Never a
Christmas goes by that I don’t think back to my childhood and the days
when you lived in that old farm house that used to sit across the field in
front of your houie...")
Christmas at the Carter’s
It’s Christmas Eve morning and here I am again
Wrapping up presents and giving Grandma a hand.
The tree’s almost decorated although it’s a Charlie Brown tree from Ross’s
Sunshine Grocery store.
Granddad’s got the lights working and Grandma’s looking for some more.
The house smells like turkey and fruit cake
And you can be sure Grandma’s been busy cooking for everybody’s sake.
The winds howling outside across the land
And the good thing about December in this town is that it’s snow blowing,
not sand.
Now my Dad’s at the door;
It’s time to go home and get ready and go get stuff for mom at the store.
A quick hug and we’re off with a bang,
In a few hours Grandma’s house will be full with the whole Carter Gang.
The sky is growing dark and we’re all in the car
Sitting and waiting for Mom (who’s always late) and gazing at the stars.
In just a few minutes we’ll be there for sure
We only live a few blocks from Grandma’s front door.
Excitement is mounting because we all know
It’s time for presents, food and Santa’s always suppose to show.
Inside we all dash with presents and food
Granddad’s in his chair, spittoon in hand and in a very happy mood.
For Christmas time was his favorite it seems
Watching little hands open presents and seeing their eyes all shining with
a gleam.
I’m thankful for the Christ Child and God’s love and all that means,
But I’m also thankful for Christmas at Grandma’s even if it’s only in my
dreams.
Thank You
