Merry Makers
John Harrington, non-
denominational lay speaker and
hobby horticulturist, will address the
next meeting of the Merry Makers,
Aug. 11, 10:30 a.m. in the
Orangefield First Baptist fellowship
hall
Harrington, a member of Kairos
Prison Ministry, will speak on
discipleship at Stiles and Terrell
prisons.
A covered dish lunch will be
served at noon. Membership is
open to those 50 years and older.
Aggie Mothers host
summer social
The Orange County A&M
Mothers Club is hosting a summer
social at the CERA off of Chemical
Row in Orange. All Aggie Moms
of former, current and new students
at Texas A&M University, their
students and members of the Orange
County A&M club are invited to
drop by on Sunday. Aug. 9, 3-5 p.m.
There will be food and games.

with each other and the Aggie

Interfaith Choir plans fall
season
The Beaumont Interfaith Choral
Society invites area singers of all
faiths and races to join them in their
1998 fall concert season. This year.
Ray Herman, director of music at
Presbyterian Church of the
Covenant ip Port Arthur, will
conduct the choir's performance of
John Rutter's Magnificat.
Registration will be held Sundays.
Aug. 23 and 30. 2 p.m. at First
United Methodist Church in
Beaumont. Dues are $5 individual.
$7.50 couple.
CASA seeks volunteers
Court Appointed Special
Advocates (CASA) of Orange
will hold a volunteer training
session Tuesday and Thursday
evenings Sept. 8-Ocl. 16, at the
CASA office, 712 W. Park, Orange.
The classes consist of 30-35 hours
of training in the specific areas of
child abuse and neglect and the
court system.
Volunteers are asked to spend at
least 3-4 hours weekly on their case.

invite visits
West Orange-Stark High School
will conduct an orientation
Thursday. Aug. 6, 6:30 p.m. for
ninth grade students new to the
district. Orientation will be
conducted in the cafetorium.
Parents are encouraged to attend.

students are invited to drop off
school supplies and meet the teacher
Friday. Aug. 7. 1:30-3 p.m.

Host families are needed for the
1998-99 school year for
international exchange students.
Families provide room, board, and
guidance while learning about the
culture of their new household

Ronald McDonald will visit
Orange County Friday. Aug. 7, to
entertain kids and help raise money
for the DESK School Supply Drive.
At 10 a.m. he’ll stop off at
McDonald's on Hwy. 62 on his way
to Wal-Mart SuperCenter in West
Orange. 11:15-12:15.
Kids may have their pictures
taken with Ronald for a $2 donation
to the DESK Drive. Donations will
help purchase school supplies for
needy children in Orange County
and other Southeast Texas
communities.
Donations may be made at any
time before Aug. 8 at any
McDonald's or Wal-Mart.
Sims Elementary holds
parent orientation
Sims Elementary in Bridge City
will hold a parent orientation
Tuesday. Aug. II. Pre-K and
kindergarten parents will meet 10-
11 a.m.; parents of students grades
1-3 will meet 11 a.m.-noon. A short
meeting will be held with the
principal and counselor in the
cafeteria. Then parents will be
dismissed to meet the teacher in the
classroom.

The Orange Power Squadron will
teach classes in boating safety at the
Lamar University-Orange Student
Center. Room 201. Two-hour

Children bom after Sept. 1984 are
required to complete the Texas
Parks and Wildlife course to receive
certfiication to operate a personal
watercraft (boat) in the state of
Texas. The course is also
recommended, though not
required, for aduhs.

The Greater Orange Area Habitat
for Humanity is preparing a taste-
tempting cookbook featuring recipes
from Habitat friends and supporters.
Habitat is a self-help housing
program made up of volunteers
from all walks of life. Low-income
working families partner with a
team of volunteers in the
construction of their new home.
Support Habitat by submitting
your family's favorite recipes to this

First Baptist Church of Orange.

registration for their '98-’99
Mother's Day Out program. MDO
meets 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesdays and
Thursdays beginning Aug. 13; cost
is $7.50 per day.
Mother's Day Out is a teaching
program for preschoolers 6 months
to*Pre-K, offering play in learning
centers, outdoor and gym activities,
music, storytime, creative art and
more in a loving. Christian
atmosphere.

child and $15 for additional

academy
Registration for the 53rd Lamar
University of Technology Fire
Academy will be Aug. 14 in
Building TA-l, Room 121, at 8 a.m.

a physical exam within the last six
months, high school transcripts, a
copy of current CPR card, driver's

appeal for donations
LifeShare Blood Center and
Baptist Hospital-Orange say the
need for blood doesn't take time off
for summer vacation. Though
donations are down, many times
blood usage increases as more
people are on the road and the
number of accidents increases.
The BHO donation site is open
Thursdays, noon to 5 p.m. The
inventory of types 0+. O-. B+ and
B- are especially low.
Donors should be 17-75 in good
general health with no history of

UTMB offers Free
immunizations
The UTMB Clinic. 10th at
Cordrey in Orange, is offering free
school immunizations during their
Health Fair. 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 8.
The fair is provided annually as a
community service. Free
immunizations are offered to all
county residents regardless of
income. Everyone is invited to
bring their children.
