unlikely heroes, inmates
volunteering their labor in the
prisoner work program.
"There is no way it could have
been done with only ($25,000)
without the prisoner manpower,"
Ellington said. "Eventually we
bought a used van to transport
them back and forth. We bought
lawnmowers and a portable phone
so they could reach the prison.
"We have done all we could
because they have done such a
great job for us." he said.
The City recently purchased an
additional trailer to carry mowing
equipment because the prisoners
are also tending the lawns at City
Hall, the sewer plant and police
station, along with a few other city
.properties.
. The new park has a slide, a big
iswing set, merry-go-round and
[park benches, some picnic tables
sand barbecue grills.
"We'd like to add more things,
such as a few covered picnic tables
and more playground equipment,"
Ellington noted, "but once again
we'd have to come up with the
money, so it may take a little
while.
"In the meantime. Bridge City
has a nice little park, and we
couldn't have had it without the
prisoners," he concluded. "They
deserve the gratitude of the
(citizens, and we want to personally
' say. Thanks!'"

Home Improvement Tips
From The Hardware Doctor
Jon Drago
Drago's True Value Hardware
Painting is one of the most popular home improvement projects.
It is easy, too, if you have great paint and some good advice.
Getting Started
Always stir the can before beginning to fully distribute the
pigment. Use the flat wooden paint stirrers for best results. You
may want to punch holes around the rim to allow paint to drain
back into the can.
~ Don't overload the brush with paint. This can cause runs on
the wall and drip paint on the floor. Dip the brush into the paint
to about 1/2 inch of the bristles, then tap gently on the rim of the
can to remove excess paint.
- Keep a cloth dampened with water or mineral spirits to wipe
up spills.
~ You’ll need to prime the walls first to make the paint adhere,
especially if you are painting over new drywall. A good way to
know If you need to prime is to sprinkle water on the wall. If the
drops are quickly absorbed, your paint will be, too. If you are
painting over an existing flat finish paint, you may not need to
prime unless the current paint is a dark color.
- Start with the ceiling. Cover the perimeter first, then paint
around the fixtures.
- Using a roller, paint ceiling sections about six feet square.
Use a series of overlapping "W" strokes, going from right to left
and back until the ceiling is covered.
- Repeat the same "W” strokes on the walls, covering to within
1-1/2’ of all edges. Cover with verticaKstrokes from top to
bottom.
- Now it is time to apply the paint. Mask the perimeter of the
ceiling with tape Paint the upper perimeter of the walls and any
areas that cannot be covered using a roller with a quality brush.
Paint the remaining wall area with a roller using overlapping "W"
strokes
~ Only brush and roller one section at a time so the brushed
areas are still wet when you roll into it This prevents "banding"
and helps the two applications biend together
- It the walls need a second coat, let the first coat dry tor a
day. Check the paint manufacturer's label tor recoating
guidelines and be sure to allow for low temperatures or high
humidity.
~ Paint trim, baseboards, doors and wind iws Tape around
newly painted wall surfaces while you a pint ti.c woodwork
- Put a dropcloth underneath doors to protect against drips.
You can use a roller to paint flat doors, but you'll need a brush to
paint panel doors.
- With double-hung windows, pull the top sash down and paint
the top part of It first Let it dry. then push It back up and paint
the bottom part of it. Follow the same procedure on the bottom
sash, then the jambs and frame
