Exercise lies numerous
Welcome, from the Orange
House! This column is once
agaiji brought to you by the
goo<f-~folks at Orange
House Retirement Resort,
601 Division, Orange.
If £oung folks decide
not to exercise, they can
live jvith that for a while
and.-jgill have some time
to gjgyheir act together.
F(g£ the elderly,
ina2Q&ity means death.
Oh.lw may take a while,
but that's what it means.
As we all become older,
exercise gets harder and
harder. The thing is,
though , that as we
become older and older,
exercise becomes more and
more important. In fact,
exercise becomes a life or
death decision.
I don't want to get too
preattiy about this but I have to
say that if you have lived more
thaiv50 years, you have a lot to
conimbute to this world.
Many of you have kids and
grarrtikids. A lot of you have
eithjpfamily or friends who
neetQjou to be in their lives for
as long as possible. This area
and the world we all live in
could-use a lot of the info you
have stored up over the years.
How can you contribute to the
world, or to your families, if
From Tin Okav.i Hoi si
you are not as healthy as
possible?
You matter to this world and
the knowledge you have can
help the folks in it. Let's do
what we can to help you get to
the place in your life where
you can start to be as healthy
as you can be. If you spend
ever day getting smarter, every
day getting wiser, every day
getting stronger, then you are
making progress. Changing
our habits and our lives is
never easy, but it is never too
late.
I know a woman. Vernice
Perry, 98, who lives here at the
Orange House. I tell you that
woman gets around better than
a lot of 30-somethings I
know. You don't get that
way from a life of
inactivity.
Karl Norburg, known as
the Big Swede, was one of
the strongest men in the
world. At age 73, he
bench pressed 31S pounds!
He did not even start
lifting weights until he
was 40 (not that 40 is old).
His father was considered
the strongest man in
Sweden after he proved to
be the only man who could
backlift a full-grown horse. He
got under the horse and put the
horse on his back, and he just
lifted.
Everyone knows that
exercise is good for you. but
what kind of exercise? How
often? How long? You want
to know what exercises are
safe for you to do. A lot of
seniors have health problems
that limit the kinds of exercises
they can do. Arthritis, for
instance, can drastically limit
the amount of any kind of
exercise that is safe for you.
You don't have to be an
aerobics master or a Hercules
to get in shape. In fact, you
don't even have to leave your
house. There are a lot of
things you can do right where
you live that are FREE and can
help you to a better you.
I talked with David R. Jones,
M.D., a physical medicine
rehabilitation specialist, or
"physiatrist," and is located at
610 Strickland, Suite 320 in
the Spine and Sports Medical
Center. Jones said a lot of the
injuries resulting from falls
could be avoided through a
program of exercise.
"Regular, consistent exercise
to maintain strength and
flexibility can go a long way to
avoid falls or other accidents,"
he said. "As people get older,
they tend to become inactive,
which contributes to muscle
weakness, lack of balance and
the reduced ability to prevent
falls."
Regular, consistent exercise
has been proven to reduce high
blood pressure and stress and
add an overall feeling of well-
being.
An anthropologist visiting a
village in the Republic of
Abkhasia, in what was the
Soviet Union, made this toast
to one of her hosts: "May you
live as long as Moses.” She
had judged the man to be
around 70 years old, and so
intended good will. The
gesture failed. Moses lived
120; the man she was talking to
was 119.
In another village in the
same republic, 200 people
claimed their age to be more
than 80. More villages in the
same republic reported the
same thing.
They eat little saturated fat.
Few smoke or chew. They
lead active lives, filled with
consistent work for people of
all ages.
In short, physical activity
and a healthy diet contribute
greatly to the health and
longevity of the elderly. If you
are going to be here anyway,
then you might as well be as
healthy as possible and feel as
good as you can feel.
The first obstacle we have to
overcome is inactivity. The
hardest part (and anyone who
you this) is simply getting <
your butt and suiting.
Second, you need to consult
your doctor when you start any
exercise program. 1
recommend a complete
physical checkup and a
doctor's okay.
You hear it over and over:
Proper nutrition and exercise
are the keys to health. The
problem is that those answers
sound so simple you take them
for granted.
And now. a word from our
sponsor.

Lprd’s Prayer to make kingdom citizens
A»f child I learned to play ruler. As George Buttrick wrote, enemies; pray for those who us. W.T. Conner said, "It's a
"Chopsticks” on the piano, plus
the nbtes of one old song. "How
Beautiful Heaven Must Be." That
hardjy qualifies me to think of
myself as a pianist, does it?
What about praying? Well.

thaty something anybody can do.
isn't it? But can we do it well?
Are we skilled and Biblically
trailed in efficient prayer? How
much help, if any. will we accept?
Alexander Whyte (1836-1921).
one of Scotland's greatest
preachers, wrote "There is nothing
in hwihc we need to take so many
lessons as prayer. There is
nothing in which we are so utterly
ignotant when we first begin.
There is nothing else we are so
bad at all our days. We are not
only ignorant here and incapapble.
we are incorrigibly unwilling to
learn. We need a lesson every
day."
If die was correct, we should
confjnue to explore what Jesus
meajj in thewords of the Lord’s
Pra^£j. or the model prayer.
TodSf we study "Thy kingdom
corned
Wi£. don’t
"kingdom."
like the word.
It sounds like one
"History has given us reason for
our distaste. The charter of
freedom has been won from
earthly kings at bitter cost, all the
way from King John to Hitler."
We are much more comfortable
with democracy,
people-rule. Our
will, not God's will.
The only one I want
to rule me is the face
I see in the mirror.
But is that right?
In the Lord's
Prayer, kingdom is
the Father's
kingdom. We must
remember the
Father's kingdom is
a kingdom of love
and redemption.
God's rule over us is
always toward His own likeness
and higher ways.
To pray "Thy kingdom come"
means that we desire to live by the
laws of His eternal kingdom.
Jesus set forth in Matthew 5-7. the
Sermon on the Mount, some of the
characteristics of kingdom
citizens. x
Kingdom citizens show
humility, the capacity for a broken
heart, meekness or controlled
strength, mercy, purity, seeking
peace with others, and standing
alone for righteousness if
circumstances so require.
Kingdom citizens avoid murder
by controlling anger and scorn
toward others. They avoid sexual
immorality by curbing inner lusts!
through clean thoughts and eye
control.
Kingdom people strive for
controlled speech and forsake
revenge. They remember that
Jesus commanded. "Love your
persecute you." (Matt 5: 44)
Kingdom persons avoid harsh
judgments, forgive others and love
God more than material things.
Somewhere today I read
"Giving a tithe is God's test to see
whether we love God more than
material wealth." Kingdom
citizens know they can trust God
for tomorrow.
It really seems to mean a lot to
pray "Thy kingdom come." doesn't
it? Puts a lot of higher ways upon
prayer to bring human life under
the control of God in Christ." It's
a prayer of surrender.
"Our Father who are in heaven.
Hallowed be Thy name. Thy
kingdom come. ..." Not an easy
prayer to pray if it means all this,
is it?
More to follow on the Lord's
Prayer in another column.
