Layberthing Warehouses Dollars For Port

There's & big demand for places to tie up ships,"
Bouiilion said. There's a lot of shipping going on right
now, so companies need a place to berth their ships so
they can do maintenance on them. Other ships that
: aren't in use have scrap value, so it's worth it to their
owners to pay for layberthing. Layberthing is a very

The Neches River in the Rose City
area has 40-foot draft, but another
port facility there would be
extremely expensive.
In addition, the other ports have
sophisticated cargo-handling
equipment that the port of Orange
does not, Bouiilion said.
The port is doing quite well right
and turning a good profit with
^berthing and warehousing
is.
"Our future is pretty much in the
business we're in now, I suspect,”
Bouiilion said.
Right now, there are seven ships,
five of them large oceangoing
vessels, berthed at the port of
Orange.’
"There's a big demand for places
to tie up ships,” Bouiilion said.
"There's a lot of shipping going on
right now, so companies need a
place to berth their ships so they
can do maintenance on them. Other
ships that aren't in use have scrap
value, so it's worth it to their
owners to pay for layberthing.
Layberthing is a very good source
of revenue and a good source of
jobs.”
The port warehouses are
completely leased and full of cargo.
Many of the warehousing
customers are Chemical Rdw plants
that need space to store their
products.
The port recently saw the
eyeing several possible projects to
increase revenue for the port and
also looking into more grants.
"Some of these would be to
expand our current facilities,” he
said. 'The focus is what we can do
to improve the infrastructure, yet
still get a fair return on our
investment. That's just good
business. We're very profitable. For
completion of a rail line spur into about $500,000 in taxes, we bring
its industrial park. The lion’s share in about another $1.5 million in
of the funding for that project came revenue.”
from grants. Bouiilion said he is

be all right to waive the policy this
time.
"Is there another company in this
area that applies this product?”
asked County Judge Carl
Thibodeaux.
"This company is from this
vicinity. I can check to see if there
are others," Wimberley replied.
The judge asked how long it
would take to get three bids. Noel
Harvey, the county auditor, said it
would not take long and he could
fT
Commissioner Don Cole
ask for proposals to be faxed. .
"We're not in that big a hurry,”
Cole said. "It's not really leaking
right now."
Jimmy Burnett, assistant Texas
attorney general, came before
commissioners Monday and said
that under the current bond form
used by the Orange County
Sheriffs Department in child
support cases, any bond forfeitures
go into the county's general fund,
but are supposed be applied for
back arrearage of child support.
When a person charged with failure
to pay child support is scheduled to
come to court and doesn't show up,
the individual forfeits the cash bond
he paid to insure his appearance.
The district clerk would hold the
funds, then turn them over to the
child support office.
Commissioners agreed to amend
the bond form to comply with the
law.
