Young people today are prob-
ably more mature about sex than
the average parent realizes, says
one noted expert on sex educa-
tion.
According to Mary S. Calder-
one, M.D., founder and current
executive director of the Sex In-
formation and Education Council
of the United States (SIECUS),
teens are not as concerned about
the sex act itself as they are
about the human situation in
which the act may occur. They
are also learning to avoid over-
sacramentalization and overex-
pression of sex in the form of
promiscuity or orgies, two things
which adults so falsely attribute
to them.
“To understand ‘where the
children are’ in terms of sexual
mores,” Dr. Calderone says, “par-
ents must do their homework.”
Although she warns that books
alone are no substitute for candid
family discussions about sex and
sexuality, she lists the following
volumes as helpful in explaining
to parents the sexual standards
of young people in 1974.
