Marine sciences field trip offered
Students atcollegesand univer-
sities across the nation are being
invited to join marine science stu-
dents at Saint Francis College in
Biddeford, Maine for a seven-
week field experience in Mexico
this winter, it was announced by
Dr. Gilbert W. Bane, professor of
marine sciences.
Mexico City, the Yucatan Pen-
insula, Cozumel Island, and the
Florida Keys will all be on the i-
tinerary during the field trip, part
of the college's expanding marine
sciences program.
"While many of our own stu-
dents will participate in this trip,"
Dr. Bane said, "We also felt it
was important to reserve some
spaces for students at other tri-
mester and 4-1-4 colleges who are
interested in marine affairs and
cultural studies, but who do not
have such opportunities available
to them on their home campuses.
Information on sex
We believe that any learning ex-
perience such as this benefits from
a broad mixture of students from
different backgrounds."
The field trip will be led by Dr.
Bane and his wife, Nikki, and will
offer courses in Tropical Marine
Ecology, Special Problems in
Fisheries Biology, and Ancient
and Contemporary Civilizations of
Mexico. Both Dr. and .Mrs. Bane
hold advanced degrees in their
fields and have taken students on
similar excursions before.
Students will leave as a group
on Dec. 18, spending the Christ-
mas season in Mexico City before
heading south along the Gulf of
Mexico to the Yucatan Peninsula.
The group will also visit Cozumel
Island in the Caribbean and will
return in early February by way of
the Florida Keys.
During the course of the jour-
ney, students will have opportu-
nities to study the ecology ofrtia-

Senators who attended the meet-
ing Wednesday evening were
greeted with a guest from the
Guadalupe Neighborhood Center
located at 729 Shannon St. in
Seguin. The guest was Mrs. Fizer
who works with the OEO funded
Center. Discussion at the meet-
ing concerned the viability of
using the center to improve health
care at TLC, particular?ly in re-
spect to sexual matters.
The center is open from 8:30
a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Fri-
day, and it normally treats low
income women between the ages
of!5and45, Although its "out-
reach program," a program to in-
form residents of their services,
is limited to poor areas of the city,
the benefits of the program are in
no way limited to only the poor.
The primary service of the cen-
ter is to provide and inform people
on the use of birth control meth-
ods. It is also a V. D. treatment
center and does provide an abor-
tion referral service. Treatment
and contraceptives are provided
free of charge; however, dona-
tions are welcome.
Mrs. Fizer then listed a number
of agencies, centers, and clinics
in San Antonio, New Braunfels,
and Seguin that also provide free
service.
The Senate felt that it was nec-
essary to get out information on
these centers. Mark Paisley
brought up the possibility of hav-
ing an emphasis week to inform
students on sexual matters. Films
and pamphlets could be brought
on campus. The Senate is also
thinking about printing a booklet
concerning sex, with a referral
list inside. A committee con-
sisting of Don Smith, Donna Stut-
rud, Pete Brown, Cecilia Brown,
and Barbara Fredholm will look
into the possibilities.
In other matters, Cecilia Brown
brought up the fact that the Pom-
Pom Girls need money. Someone
retorted that they should get the
money they need from the cheer-
leaders. Miss Brown suggested
that there was some tension be-
tween the cheerleaders and the
Pom-Pom Girls, and that the
cheerleaders had no money any-
way. Tim Georg was not too re-
ceptive tothe idea of giving Sen-
ate funds to the girls.
In the meeting Georg also made
it a point to say that many Sen-
ators were missing because they
were preoccupied with the Wurst-
fest.
