HOUSTON-Sunday, March 5,
brings to close yet another year at
the Houston Livestock Show and
Rodeo. Stars such as Reba Mc-
Entire, George Strait, The Judds,
etc., got a lot of attention, but let’s
focus on a star who’s there for every
performance.
Warren Leslie Skaggs, alias Tiny
Skaggs, band leader of the Tiny
Skaggs Rodeo Band. Skaggs and
his 23 piece band have been with
the rodeo for 23 years.
He actually started out in radio
bands in 1938 and eventually
landed a position as an organ
player in the Tony Marlin Band. It
was when Tony left the band that
Skaggs took over and renamed it
the Tiny Skaggs Rodeo Band. He
also enlarged it by adding banjos
and steel guitars to give the band
more of a country or rodeo sound.
5>kaggs claims they have only a
three hour rchcarsal io prepare for
the yearly event, which by the way,
they are contracted to. He signals
his band members by hand. Each
event has a certain number of gal-
lops, for instance, a hands down
signals a down beat while a hand
across signals a cut off point. He
writes all the musical arrangements

Skaggs credits his career begin-
nings to an accordian which he pur-
chased for $5 from a local
paperboy, which he then taught
himself to play. He also claims he
had a scholarship to Kentucky
School of Music, and on his way to
registration a friend invited to a live
radio broadcast.
It was there that he was offered a
part in a radio band, and he never
attended school again. His life has
been music ever since.
When asked what the highlights
of his job is, he replied, “1 guess it
would be people appreciating what
we do.”
When the band isn’t playing the
rodeo, they’re playing parties, dan-
ces and other functions all over
Texas.
Music alone isn’t Tiny’s only
credits. He’s been in a number of
commercials, including Budweiser.
Foley’s, and Weiner’s. Some movie
credits include “Liar’s Moon”,
“Reborn”, “Houston Knights”,
“Hennigan’s Law” and even some
theatrical credits.
The sixty-year-old Skaggs and his
wife reside in Houston and have no
children. Skaggs plans to be with
the rodeo for years to come.
There are only two requirements
to be in his band: be a member of
the American Federation of
Musicians Union and know how to
read music.
