TAILWATER RETURN
SYSTEMS IMPORTANT
TO CONSERVE WATER
By. W. P. Gilbreth Soil Con-
servation Service: Tail water
recovery systems are installed
to conserve farm irrigation
water and reduce pollution by
collecting the water that runs
off irrigated fields and making
this water available for reuse on
the farm.
Tail water recovery systems
are adapted for use only on irr-
igated lands^that are served by a
surface irrigation system properly
designed and installed to fac-
ilitate the conservation use of
soil and water resources and where
recoverable runoff occures or can
be antisipated under the mana-
gement practice used or expected
to be used.
Tail water recovery systems
may be used with a graded fur-
row or graded border system.
Temproary storage is needed
to store the collected tail water
until it is re-distributed in the
farm irrigation system. The
desired control of water at the
point where the tail water is re-
turned to the irrigation system is
considered in determining the
capacity of storage required.
Storage pits constructed on the
ends of irrigation fields are the
most common type used in the
McClellan Creek Soil and
Water Conservation District here
in Carson County, to collect
the tail water in. These pits
whould be protected from erosion
and damage from rain fall
run-off, this may be accomplished
by completely enclosing the pit
with the spoil dirt dug out of the
pit. A suitable size of pipe
through the embankment will
serve as an inlet to the pit.
Tail water return systems need
facilities of some kind to convey

the tail water from the storage
pit to the point of re-entry into
the farm irrigation system. On
most irrigated farms in the Dis-
trict this would be the under-
ground pipeline on the upper end
of the field. Pumps are used at
the pit to pump tail water in to
the main pipeline this may be
underground pipe or portable
aluminum.
The Soil Conservation Service
Technicians have assisted the
following irrigation farmers on
tail water systems and collection
pits, J. D. Kelly Jr. , and Floyd
M. Hodges of Panhandle. Tail
water systems and pits have been
designed and laid off on R. J.
Sailor Jr. of White Deer and
Jerry Hawkins of Panhandle.
The local Soil Conservation
Service in Panhandle will
assist irrigation farmers in the
desigining, layout and checking
of a tail water return system on
their irrigated farms.
Every irrigation farmer needs
to plan some type of tail water
return system if he does not have
one. Irrigation water is a de-
clining resource and must be
conserved.

performance, and most impor-
tant to everyone connected, the
cook will be preparing tasty
meals for all employees.
Many people who come to the
circus never stop to think of all
the efforts that have been made
to make their visit an enjoyable
one, others wonder how all this
is accomplished in so short a
time. If you are one of these
persons, you and anyone else
who wish are invited down
to the show grounds to see Dixie
and all the other circus employees
get things done in so short a time.
Dixie and most of these people
will also take the tent down
again as soon as the show is
over. Everyone has a job to do,
everything has a special place
to be loaded and seldom is any-
thing ever left on the lot after
the circus has left town.
