Weekly Message . . .
From Our W.D. Ministers
FATHER JAMES CURZINSKI
Turing this Lenten Season some
of our parishioners arc involved
in a study club which is discus-
sing the Gospel of St. Luke. I
knew some would become very
uncomfortable when they start-
ed to delve deeply into the prob-
lem and become aware of the f
fact that what St. Luke and the
other three Gospel writers under-
stood as historical fact in the life
of Jesus and what we understand
by historical fact are not quite
the same thing. In fact, the very
existence of four distinct gospel
narratives dealing with the life
of Christ is sufficient indication
that the meaning of Jesus was
being considered from four dif-
ferent points of view - each of
which was making the same ul-
timate profession: Jesus is Lord.
Tire very first sentence of St.
Luke's Gospel tells us that he
prepared his text by using diffe-
rent sources. Roman Catholic
scripture scholars are in fair a-
greement that the earliest of the
four Gospels to take definite
shape was the Gospel of St. .
Mark, who somewhat faithfully
represented the preaching of St.
Peter, since he was his regular
travelling companion. They are
inclined to agree that Mark's
Gospel was one of Luke's sour-
ces a little more than half of
what is contained in Mark is also
contained in Luke.
They also agree that Matthew
used Mark as a source and that
both Luke and Matthew used
another written source which no
longer exists. It does not appear
that St. Matthew and St. Luke
were aware of the other's writ-
ing. A rough dating for these
three gospels would be about

Gospel being written a little lat-
er. Take note that the gospels
were written no earlier than 30
years after the death of Jesus.
That is a long time for the hum-
an memory to keep in place
many details. Rbughly speaking,
can you recall the verbal ac-
counts of your grandparents'
weddings? But you know they
were married and that certain
things will clearly stand out,
the sequence of events will get
jumbled up, some details will
fade away, and others will be
emphasized or embellished, de-
pending on whose telling what
about that important wedding
day. You may be lucky enough
even to find scraps of Written
accounts to help put the wedd-
ing day account all together,
and then find out from Aunt
Patsy that the newspaper printed
the wrong minister's name be-
cause the one scheduled to per-
form the ceremony got sick at
the last minute and couldn't be
there.
You are now fairly well faced
with the situation confronting
the writers of the four Gospel
accounts. Some were able to use
use their own memories. They
were able to use some scraps of
written information, and a lot
of spoken stories which were
floating aroiuid the earlies Chris-
tian communities. The impor-
tant facts stick out very clearly.
But the sequences get jumbled
up, and many of the details
are mutually contradictory. It
is impossible on the basis of the
four Gospels to come up with
a firm historical chronology of
the life of Christ. One cannot
certainly even ascertain what
day of the week the Last Supper
took place, although we observe
liturgically the majority opinion

and call it Holy Thursday.
Now consider for whom the
Gospels'were originally written,
or why they were written. Sim-
plistically stated, these observa-
tions are true: Mark, for Chris-
tians living in pagan Rome; Mat-
thew for Christians with a Jewish
background; Luke, who was the
only non-Jew of the four Evange-
lists (he was of Greek pagan
background) wrote his account
for Greek speaking Christians,
who like him came from a pag-
an background and were not all
that familiar with the Old Tes-
tament Scriptures. And dear
John, the aged old man, who
gave a loving personal account
of the meaning of Jesus in his
life, partially as a final testi-
mony, and partially to leave be-
hind in writing some things
which were not contained in the
other gospel accounts - for which
reason he skips much of what is
contained in the other accounts.
Each account is a very impor-
tant document of faith.

thoughts of spring . . .
By Mary Line
Spring is here - a time for
nostalgia - remembering days
gone by with wistful pondering -
looking out the window at spring
sunshine and the promise of bet-
ter things to come - the hope
that springs eternal; familiar
music on the radio bringing back
memories of moods, people,
places, and times;
Going to track meets - boys
and girls everywhere, waiting
their turns in their sweat suits,
windblown spectators, patient
coaches keeping tabs on the day
day's events and on their char-
ges, wind, rain, or sunshinp, as
the case may be . . .

Yes, another spring has come,

Hi
Show me a man who
fights competition,
meets payrolls,
pays taxes and
faces bankruptcy.
And, I'll show you a man with motivation.
Maybe you've heard the story. About the rabbit who
was being chased by the hound and trying desperately
to get to the safety of his hole. A little bird sitting on a
limb yelled down, "Rabbit, do you think you're gonna
make it?" The rabbit answered, "Think nothing, I gotta
make it."
Business management is not unlike that sometimes.
There is usually somebody or something nipping at your
heels. Like a competitor who has found a way to do some-
thing better for less. Or, a profit predator, like taxes
or inflation, trying to head you off. These problems have
to be overcome if you are to stay in business.
This system, tough as it is, sure does turn out some
fast rabbits. Only those who perform, make it.
This analogy holds in business management, too.
Competition and other pressures tend to weed out the
inept, force efficiency, produce better products and
services and keep prices in line. Business, in keeping one
step ahead of its competitors, makes a winner
out of the consumer.
