THIRTY MILE HIKE AND STILL SMILING — These White Deer hikers took advantage of their
Friday out of school last; week and tredded over thirty miles to Pampa and back to White Deer. The
seven “kiddos” ranging in age from nine years to thirteen years left Friday morning at 8:30 a.m.
After reaching Pampa around 1:30 p.m. they visited Kent Kelp's grandmother and rested a while.
They started back at 2:30 and reached home with “sore feet” but still smiling around 7:45 p.m.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dresback,
Skeilytown, are the proud parents
of a baby girl born Friday, March
1, at 7:47 a.m., in a Pampa hos-
pital weighing 6 pounds-13 ounces.
Paul T. Buchanan
Files For Election
To School Board
Mr. Paul T. Buchanan has filed
for election to the White Deer-
Skellytown School Board.
He made the following release
to The News Monday:
He has been a resident of this
community for 13 years. He is a
graduate of Panhandle A&M Col-
lege, Goodwell, Oklahoma, and
holds a Bachelor of Science de-
gree in chemistry and education.
Mr. Buchanan is employed as
Plant Chemist at Cargray Plant
for the Dorchester Gas Producing
Co. He has been active with the
Lions Club and the Boy Scout or-
ganization for many years in
Whitb Deer and the Adobe Walls
Council. He has two children in
this school system.
Mr. Buchanan stated that our
parent to school relationship must
be improved if we expect to create
the incentive among our students
that is needed lor greater scholas-
tic achievement. He also stated
that we people will soon have a
hard fight on our hands if we ex-
pect to stop further encroachment
of the Federal Government into
our free schools that we all have
a duty to protect.
Miss Jane Bates
Elected President
Of Honor Society
Jane Bates, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. H. T. Bates, was recent-
ly elected president of the White
Deer chapter of the National Hon-
or Society. Jane is a typical mem-
ber of the NHS. She has main-
tained an average above 90 for
three and a half years in high
school and has rendered outstand-
in service and leadership to her
school and community.
Miss Bates has been an active
participant in the following activ-
ities of the school: Future Home-
maker Club, Future Teacher
Club, Junior Historian Club, Or-
der of the Black Masque, Pep
Club, Chorus and National Honor
Society. She has been elected to
positions of leadership in the ma-
jority of the above clubs and, in
addition, has served as secretary
of the freshman class and vice-
president of the senior class.
During her sophomore year she
was chosen by the high school fac-
ulty as the “outstanding citizen.”
This is one of the highest honors
a student may receive.
The ability to work and the
charming personality of Jane has
been recognized in community af-
fairs as well as school. She has
served as president of Y. W. A.,
pianist for the Baptist Church,
and Sweetheart of the Lions Club
and Brotherhood.

RIDING CLUB TO MEET
The White Deer Riding Club
will hold their regular monthly
meeting tonight at 7:30. The La-
dies Club will meet in the home
of Mrs. James Stalls and the
Men’s Club will have their meet-
ing in the Hospitality Room of
the bank.
Kick-Off Breakfast
Will Get Red Cross
Fund Drive Started
The Red Cross Drive for White
Deer will begin Tuesday morn-
ing at 6:30 a.m. with a kick-off
breakfast in the school cafeteria.
Chairman of the drive will be W.
C. Powers and co-chairman, Alvin
Williams.
The quota set for Carson Coun-
ty is a little over $2400. Twenty
workers will convass the town
and rural areas for the annual
drive, where the general public
will have the opportunity to make
donations to the Red Cross drive.
RIDING CLUB WILL RIDE
IN SHAMROCK PARADE
The White Deer Riding Club
has been invited to ride in the St.
Patrick’s parade in Shamrock on
Saturday, March 16. The cele-
bration of the 17th annual St.
Patrick’s Day will get underway
Saturday with a colorful mile-
long parade and marching bands,
plus a host of other varied free
entertainment throughout the day.
Pioneer Family Names Are Needed to
Complete Historical Files For County
County history is in the mak-
ing prior to 1920 through the ef-
forts of the Carson County His-
torical Survey Committee. Plans
are being formulated this week to
record the history of pioneer res-
idents of Carson County.
After checking through the
church records of the local church-
es, we have obtained the follow-
ing pioneer family names which
we are sure is incomplete. But

Condition Is Said
To Be Satisfactory
Roger Simmons, 14-year-old
son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Sim-
mons, who was accidentally hit in
the back of his head by an eight-
pound shot-put, is reported doing
nicely.
Roger’s accident happened on
Monday during the noon hour
and he was rushed to a hospital
in Pampa, from there he was
rushed by ambulance to St. An-
thony’s Hospital in Amarillo. He
underwent surgery late Monday
evening, when two blood clots
were removed from his head.
His condition is reported good
with the possibility of being re-
leased from the hospital in about
ten days.
Roger is in Room 234 at St. An-
thony’s hospital in Amarillo.
Pets To Receive
Vaccination Shots
Saturday, March 23 Lions Due To Hear
Farm Bureau Head
Dr. Kenneth Royse, veterinarian
from Pampa, will be at the Fire
Station from 9 to 12 a.m. Satur-
day, March 23, to vaccinate your
pets. The charge will be $2.00 for
the rabies shot, which is good for
about 14 months, but it is sug-
gested that the shot be given at
about intervals of one year. Dr.
Royse was here last year on
March 24. The time of the year
is approaching for all pets to be
vaccinated to prevent rabies.
The arrangements for the vac-
cinations were made by the White
Deer Fire Department.
Tags for dogs may be purchas-
ed at the City Hall.
Car License Sales
Behind Schedule
According to an announcement
by the School Tax Office this
week, motor vehicle license sales
for 1963 are way behind when
compared to this date last year.
Felix W. Ryals, Deputy Carson
County Collector, in charge of
motor vehicle license sales for the
White Deer area, stated that the
School Tax Office would remain
open all day the last two Satur-
days this month as a convenience
to local area people. He reminds
motorists that March 31 is the
deadline for purchasing 1963 tags.
The 1963 license plates must be
on all motor vehicles in use on
April 1. April 15 is the deadline
for getting the safety sticker on
the windshield.
all family names that resided in
this area prior to 1920 are want-
ed to add to this list.
Also, one person from each
family is wanted to write their
respective family history. This
history should contain dates,
names, and both tragedy and hu-
morous events of the family. Four
typewritten copies are needed in
order to file a copy in each of the
county libraries and the fourth
copy for use in the general his-
tory of the county.

the Texas Farm Bureau, will
speak to the White Deer Lions;
Club next week. Mr. Leach is a
native of Tulia and will explain
the wheat program.
The Lions Club meets at 6:30
p.m. in the school cafeteria. All
area farmers are invited to come
and hear Mr. Leach, whose ad-
dress will begin at approximately
7 p.m. after the supper next Tues-
day night.
Business News
Freeman’s Dry Goods, now in
its new store, has announced
plans for their formal opening on
Friday, March 22, according to
Mr. Clint Freeman. Over $200.00
in prizes will be given away dur-
ing the day. Watch for details in
next week’s issue of The News.
White Deer Radio & TV Ser-
vice, the new business which had
its opening two weeks ago, will
have its drawing for a transistor
clock radio on Saturday, March
16, at 3 p.m., according to Mr.
Tom Watson. For more informa-
tion, see the advertisement on
Page 6 of this issue.
The local G. & H. Greenhouse
has many unusual plants in bloom
at this time. Perhaps the most un-
usual for this area are the or-
chids in bloom. Everyone is wel-
come to come out to see them.
