Screwworm Fund
Drive Is Booming;
Progress Made
At least a dozen Texas coun-
ties have already collected more
than $5,000 since February 1, giv-
ing Southwest Animal Health Re-
search Foundation trustees con-
fidence that the $1,000,000 need
ed to keep the Screwworm Erad^
ication Program operational will
be raised by March 1.
Several counties report collec
tions in excess of $11,000 and the
county chairman throughout the
state declare their fund-raising
activities will continue in order to
insure the successful completion
of the program.
Victoria county reports $12,000
collected since the beginning of
the month and its chairman is op-
timistic of raising $18,000 by the
end of February. Its neighbor,
Refugio county, reports $14,000
Kleberg county has collected $12,-
000 and Crockett county $11,000.
Also aiding the drive is a $1,000
contribution by the Charolais Cat
tie Association, which represents
the Charolais Breeders of Texas.
Favorable reports have been
streaming into the Mission head-
quarters for several weeks, leav-
ing Foundation trustees to state
that they have no doubt the nec-
sessary funds will be collected.
The Foundation announced last
month that livestock producers
and sportsmen must raise the re-
maining $1,000,000 of a $3,000,000
goal by March 1 to keep the three-
year eradication program from
being halted.
Adding to the already highly
favorable reports from the live-
stock industry was the announce-
ment by the Sportsmen’s Club of
Texas that it is endorsing a state-
wide “Dollars For Deer” cam-
paign. The campaign, fostered by
the Rio Grande Valley Sports-
men’s Club, is directed t oward
deer hunters, asking them to con
tribute at least one dollar for ev-
ery deer they killed during the
past season. Arrangements are
being made for all banks in the
state to accept checks made out
to “Dollars For Deer.”
Carson County Chairman Ru-
dolph Tucker of Groom and his
committee are encouraged by lo-
cal support of the program. All
persons who would like to assist
in this program are asked to con-
tact either Tucker, George Cof-
fee in White Deer, or Paul Dauer
of Panhandle.
