Summer Commencement
Harris receivesDr. Lindell O. Harris, retired chairman of the
HSU Division of Religion and Phillips Professor of
Bible, was a recipient of an honorary doctor of let-
ters degree at HSU's Aug. 17 Commencement pro-
gram in Behrens Chapel.
He was on the faculty at HSU for 28 years before
his retirement in May, 1980.
The citation in his honor for the degree was read
by Gene Adams of Seymour, chairman of the HSU
Board of Trustees.
"Anyone who has attended Hardin-Simmons
University during the past 32 years has, at the very
least, a passing acquaintance with Dr. Lindell O.
Harris," Adams said. "Those misfortunate ones
who have had only a passing acquaintance with Dr.
Harris, would be greatly surprised to know that he
knows more about you than you are aware."
Adams complimented Harris for "his fantastic
memory of names and year of graduation of not
only former students in his class but other students
as well."
Harris, a native of Blodgett, Mo., attended
Southwest Baptist College, Bolivar, Mo., Baylor
University, and Southwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary, Fort Worth, where he obtained his
Th.D. degree in 1949.
After pastoring churches in Texas, Louisiana,
and Missouri, heand hiswife Connie were missionaries
with the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board in
Hawaii. He served in this capacity for six years
before joining the HSU faculty as chairman of the
Division of Religion.
