Community Bulletin Board
Operation Sparkle deadline is
Tuesday
The Bridge City Chamber of
Commerce will sponsor its sixth an-
nual Christmas decorating contest,
Operation Sparkle, for residents
and businesses.
The home decorating contest is
open to all Bridge City, Oran-
gefield and McLewis residents, and
businesses will compete in a win-
dow decorating contest.
There is no entry fee for either
contest. The deadline to enter is
Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 3 p.m. Entries
may be taken by calling the Cham-
ber office at 735-5671 or in person
at 150 W. Roundbunch.
Residents will vie for first, second
and third place gift certificates.
First place winner will receive a $25
shopping certificate from Jeanne’s
Fashions. Second place winner will
receive a $20 gift certificate from
Welcome Friends and third place
will also receive a gift certificate.
Judging for the residences will be
held Thursday, Dec. 20 between 6-
9 p.m. All contestants are asked to
have their lights on between those
hours.
Bridge City businesses are invited
to enter the window decorating
contest and vie for a traveling
trophy. Judging will also be

Sims Wellness Club
Thirty-six Sims Elementary facul-
ty members have been participat-
ing in a personal wellness club. Em-
phasis is placed on a healthy life-
style. Points are received for eating
three balanced meals per day, exer-
cising for thirty minutes in duration
at least three times a week and for
spending fifteen minutes for self in
relaxation each day. Bonus points
may be obtained by attending any
type of health seminar, having
physical exams, and having various
health screening procedures.
Individuals with the highest
points for the first four weeks were:
Juana Matthews and Diana Deck-
ert who tied for first place, and An-
gelina Garza, third place.
The team that had the highest
average per person was the kinder-
garten teachers who include Carlis
Roy, Diana Deckert, Carol Hol-
den, Dana Hill and Becky Nichols.
DeYoung omitted from honor
roll
Ninth grader Chad DeYoung’s
name was inadvertently left off the
Bridge City High School honor roll
list. He was named to the regular
honor roll.
Landfill to close for holiday
The Orange County Landfill will
be closed on Dec. 24-25 for the
Christmas holiday and Dec. 31 and
Jan. 1 for the New Year holiday.

confer the degrees and bring the
message from the president. Dr.
Tom Sanders, vice president for
academic affairs, will certify the
candidates.
The Honorable Ron Lewis, state
representative from Orange, will
deliver the commencement ad-
dress.
Janet Hamilton, director of nurs-
ing, will present the graduating
class. Rajiv Malkan, assistant
professor of computer information
systems, will recognize the honor
graduates.

Children'* choir Christmas
musical
The children's choir. Singing Dis-
ciples, and the puppets, Sonshine
and Company, will present the
Christmas musical “The Miracle at
the Manager,” at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 23.
They are part of the ministry of
First Baptist Church, Orangefield,
located on Hwy. 105.
The musical is arranged by Herb
Owen and is under the direction of
Jana Ewing.
Single Again class beginning
Jan. 6
Single Again, a class for the
divorced and widowed, will begin
an eight week “Rebuilders” class
Jan. 6. Calvary Baptist Church of
Beaumont sponsors the class which
will meet on Sunday mornings at
11:00 each week in room 115. The
class will deal with issueds like
“Custody of Myself,” “I’m So Lone-
ly I Could Die,” and “Rediscover
Happiness.” Book cost will be $3.

Musicians League to perform
The Golden Triangle Musicians
League will perform Friday, Dec.
21 at Parkdale Mall. The band will
be located at the clock center near
the old main entrance.
Two concerts are scheduled, 3
p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Organist Jim Kesman will
provide Christmas music for the
public throughout the day.
Students from Vidor, Bridge
City, Orangefield and West Orange
will be representing their schools in
this volunteer band project.
Soloists will perform with the
organ during the day.
The Golden Triangle Musicians
Leagueu is a community youth
band that plays for fun, said Kes-
man. Anyone interested in mem-

completed VA Form 20-8993 or an
official VA letter granting retroac-
tive benefits that clearly states “in
lieu of VA Form 20-8993” with
their annual federal tax forms.
The second tax liability issue con-
cerns cases where veterans have
paid taxes on the total amount of
disability severance pay awarded to
them by the military and are sub-
sequently awarded VA disability
compensation.
In these cases, VA is required to
recoup the entire lump sum paid by
the military, including the amount
paid for taxes. This is generally ac-

believe they are due a tax refund on
that portion of the recoupment
paid for taxes. IRS has determined,
however, that disability severance
pay is taxable income because it is
received as a lump-sum payment
rather than a monthly disability
benefit. IRS has also concluded
that no reduction in tax liability
would occur if the veteran were
subsequently entitled to VA dis-
ability benefits for the same dis-
ability.

ing either of these tax issues should
contact the nearest VA regional of-
fice for clarification and guidance.
