shop Tell him or her you want to see
more refund forms displayed Have

the same Another thing you can try
Is when you see a sales representa-
tive In the store, ask if they have any
refund forms on their products. Let
them know you'd like to see them

check out another supermarket In
your area since you said In your
letter you've been shopping in the
same store for years.
If you still find it next to impossi-
ble to locate the good refund forms
in your area, I would suggest you
subscribe to a refund paper with a
good trading section. When you
answer one of the ads. be sure to
include a list of the forms you're

AUSTIN - American Cancer
Society volunteers around the state
are readying efforts to chalenge
smokers to “Leave the Pack Be-
hind” during the Society’s 13th an-
nual Great American Smokeout
November 16.
Sponsored by the American Can-
cer Society, the Great American
Smokeout is a fun-filled, light-
hearted celebration held each year
on the third Thursday in November
to encourage smokers and tobacco
users to quit the habit for 24 hours.
The effort is the largest health
promotion event in the country.
Thi^year's campaign has enlisted
the support of former U.S. Surgeon
General C. Everett Koop, M.D.,
who will serve as an honorary co-
chairman of the effort with
longtime Smokeout Honorary
Chairman Larry Hagman. Koop
and Hagman are featured in
television and radio public service
announcements promoting the
Smokeout.
Last year’s Smokeout triggered
10.7 percent of the nation’s
smokers — 5.4 million Americans —
to give up cigarettes for 24 hours.
One to three days later, according
to a Gallup Survey, 3.4 million were
still abstaining from tobacco.
“The American Cancer Society is
hoping this thirteenth annual Great
American Smokeout will prove to
be lucky one for Texas smokers,”
said Lynn Adams Hancock, Hous-
ton, chairman of the Texas
Smokeout campaign. “I quit smok-
ing myself four years ago during the
Smokeout,” she said, “so I know
firsthand that a positive, supportive
approach can be just the en-
couragement a smoker needs to
take the first steps toward quitting
permanently.”
Hancock and other American
Cancer Society volunteers are
especially interested in reaching
women smokers. “More women
are dying from lung cancer than
breast cancer in this country, and
that’s a crime,” Hancock said,
citing Society statistics that show
lung cancer surpassing breast can-
cer as the number one cancer killer
of women.

“Smoking is responsible for
percent of lung cancer cases, and
that means 87 percent are prevent-
able by choosing not to smoke,'
Hancock explained. “We hope at
least one in five Texas smokers will
join the Smokeout this year ...that
would mean almost 640,000 Texans
would take a big step toward betler
healih November 16.”
Janet Hamilton, director of nurs-
ing at Lamar University-Orange,
said, "A September, 1987, tobacco
report of the U.S. Department of
Agriculture estimates cigarette
output in 1987 at 654 billion, down
1 percent from 1986, about the
same decrease as the previous year
We know people are making an el^t
fort to stop smoking, we just want
to give them a little incentive by
providing a few helpful hints to as-
sist them in their struggle to quit.”
"Quit Tips” covers the benefits of
quitting such as adding years to
one’s life, improved stamina, an in-
creased sense of smell and taste
and the proof of one’s self-control.
According to Ms. Hamilton,
sample quit tips are taking a shower
because a person cannot smoke in
the shower, seeking new activities,
performing old activities in new
ways or getting in the habit ol doing
things differently.

cer Society’s “Quit Tips” or for
