POLITICS NO GAME FOR THE WEAK AT HEART
Should County Commissioner RON SIGLER officially throw
his hat in the ring for U.S. Congress? He would have to resign
his County seat. In that case the duty of appointing someone to
the post falls squarely on the shoulders of County Judge CARL
THIBODEAUX. Other County appointments are made by
commissioners court. Replacing a commissioner is the judges'
cad.
Here's one thing that could happen, Sigler could choose not
to officially announce appointING an exploratory team working to
determine if he should run. There's some down sides to this;
however, he can hold onto his commissioners seat, if he officially
announces for Congress on January 2. That leaves him less
than a year in Ns term, so he doesn't have to resign. In a way not
a bad move, but that puts him two months behind in actively
campaigning. At best it will be a tough race with plenty
candidates.
Sigler traveled the district last week testing the waters and
meeting community leaders.
Folks are still guessing what Orange Countian DONNA
PETERSON will do. She can stand to wait. Her three
previous races give her good name I.D. She doesn't have to
rush her decision. Money , however, is another matter.
It will be a costly trip. Three races will have to be run by both
parties. Primary, runoff, general election. My guess is it will cost
between half-a-million to one million to get to winners' circle.
Who has the best shot at raising money? SENATOR
TURNER has. He's a sitting State Senator who doesn't have
to give up his post to run for Congress. Even if he loses this
one, he's still in the State House. Gives him a better shot at the
_#g money.
” Other names being tossed around are; BUB BA GROCE ,
plenty money, won lotto, bad first name. Doug Harrington, son
a former Senator. Good East Texas connections. Novice on
; bis own, ran his dad's campaign. Tony Houseman, choice of
l many Orange Countians. Looks the part and could raise the
money. Could win with Arthur Temple's support. Problems are,
what banner would he run under, too many irons in the fire, a
step backwards.
What will happen to Commissioner Precient 1 position is
r anyone's guess. If Sigler resigns, Thibodeaux is between a rock
and a hard place. Pressure comes in many forms. One name
being often mentioned is former county judge JAMES
STRINGER. Even if he's not appointed he might run. Some
folks are mentioning Mike White as the appointee. He would
have to ask for it. We understand JOE WARE is not
interested, but at least a half dozen others are
A lot of Ms. SIGLER r holds the key, THIBODEAUX the
trump card. Because he could wait, do nothing and appoint
whoever wins in the Democratic primary in March.
Opinions, everyone has one. All of the above is an
uneducated, novice's opinion. So don't bet the farm.
A FEW HAPPENINGS
