Homeowners who act as their own contractors usually do so
for the sole reason of saving money. Still, the money you save
may not outweigh the effort that’ll be required of you serving as
your own general contractor That will require a great deal of
time, patience and motivation
Being the boss means just that. You’ll have to hire and pay
subcontractors You’ll have to coordinate their efforts and
schedule the job. You’ll have to apply for building permits and
summon local inspectors And, unfortunately, you’ll need to set-
tle disputes.
We are ready to build our own home. We are going to con-
tract out everything ourselves I have watched several of my
friends go through the building of their homes only to see them
argue the whole time. Is there a way to get through this time
without much strain on a marriage?
1. Do you really want the job?
2 Do you have the time and the patience for the job?
3. Will you save more money than you could earn after taxes
if you applied the same time and effort to your regular
work?
4. Do you have sufficient construction knowledge or are you
willing to study and learn?
5. Can you spend hours interviewing, checking references
and inspecting previous work in order to find good sub-
contractors?
6. Can you solicit bids from sub contractors and negotiate a
contract with each? /
7. Do you have the assertiveness to supervise workers?
8. Can you stay cool under stress?
9. Are you a reasonably skilled do-it-yourselfer?
10 Can your marriage survive the additional stress of making
such important decisions or compromises between two
people who may have opposite opinions?
Give yourself 10 points for each time you answer yes; if your
total is;
70 or higher, you will probably do well as a contractor is the
job isn’t a major one.
50 or 60 you are in a grey area.
40 or less leave the job to a professional.
Q. I bought a white prefab bookshelf from Wal-Mart, and it
looks too contemporary or utilitarian. How can I give it a more
traditional look? I have it recessed in the wall for now.
A. Leave the white bookshelf recessed. Frame the opening
with stock trim. Attach a square of 1 X 4 to the corners or the
bottom. Then apply a pediment to the wall, resting the bottom of
the homemade pediment on the top of the frame, (use a 1 X 12
the width of your unit).
Nugent and John Bickham.
Attending as maids of honor

the bride. Bridesmaids were Jenny Hart, Leah LebBouef, sister
of the groom, Connie Price, and Melody Green. Gary Green
served as best man. Groomsmen were Ben Waldrop, Chad
Bromley, Shane Rice, and David Boehme. Ushers were Sammy
Simon, and Tyler LeBouef, brother of the groom.
A leception followed at Family Life Center at the church.
Hous jparty included Brandie Richard, Mandie White, Jodie
White, Melissa Morris, Kelly White, and Kerry White.
The bride is a graduate of Bridge City High School and was
graduated from Lamar University. She is currently employe# at
St. Mary Hospital. The groom is a graduate of Little Cypress-
Mauriceville High School and was graduated from Lamar
University. He is employed with Bayer of Orange.
