Kuykendall
Continued From Pg. 1
Then one day hope finally
came. Whik reading a magazine
article about a woman with
Agoraphobia (an abnormal fear
or being In public places,
crowds, or open areas).
Kuykendall saw herself. She
had the same symptoms as the
woman In the arUck. Ecstatic
to finally have a name for her
'monster.' Kuykendall now
says. 'Just knowing 1 wasn't
crazy, and having a name for
this thing, probably cured 25
percent of my problem.'
She wrote for information to
Anxiety Disorder Association of
America (ADAA). The literature
gave her what all the medical
doctors couldn't — an
explanation. Kuykendall started
collecting all the Information
she could find, and began to
study her disorder, trying to
understand the questions she
desperately needed answered.
She quickly discovered that
her disorder. Agoraphobia,
came under a much larger
heading, that of High Anxiety
Disorders. This 'umbrella'
encompasses a wide range of
fears and phobias She learned
that stress was a factor.
'Although stress doesn't cause
an attack, it can trigger one.'
she explains. Reflecting on the
circumstances surrounding her
first attack. Kuykendall
attributes her personal
problems at the time, as well as
having started a new diet, as
being the cause. Compounding
this was the medical doctors
Inability to detect, and thus
identify the problem, which led
to more stress.
"None of my doctors could tell
me, "You have Panic Disorder.'
she says, 'because I was
producing physical symptoms,
and to most doctors, a mental
problem does not produce
physical symptoms.
Kuykendall also found,
although the direct cause Is not
known, anxiety disorders are
believed to be hereditary. They
may e genetic or learned, or a
combination of the two. An
overpro tec five, or overcrttical
parent can perpetuate this
problem by instilling a feeling of
self-doubt tn the child that may
not surface for years.
Anxiety disorders attack
without discriminating to race,
sex. or social status. They are
believed to be a major factor of
substance and child abuse as
well. It s estimated 40 percent
of alcoholics have panic
disorders," Kuykendall notes, a
statistic the Jasper AA director
agrred with.
Although there Is no set profile
of an AD sufferer. Kuykendall
describes the general person.
We like to be tn control of our
lives. When things get out of
control Is when we start having
problems managing our state of
mind. Also, we tend to be very
highly creative people, with very
good imaginations. We create a
'Boogcyman* that doesn't really
exist. Then we develop
anticipatory panic, thinking.
What if I have an attack' or
worse.'
'Knowledge Is the key to
everything.' Is Kuykendall's
philosophy, and knowing what
to fight, for her. began her cure.
Determined to get her life back,
and needing to know how to do
it without the drugs doctors
were recommending.
Kuykendall looked toward
therapy.
Unable to find a self-help
group, or a doctor familiar with
her problem. Kuykendall
recontacted ADAA about
starting her own therapy group.
She knew she wasn't alone, and
she was right. The first meeting.
In Jasper, where they were then
living, yielded 25 people.
Together they learned about
their disease, and supported
each other toward a better life.
